Currently filming its first season, with an eye on a 2025 launch date, is the latest series in the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Some kind of Starfleet Academy project has been rumored since the ’80s, for both film and TV. But one is finally happening at last. Starfleet Academy is the fourth Paramount+ Star Trek live-action series, and the ninth live-action Star Trek series overall. Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series.

Title

The official title of the upcoming Paramount+ series is Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Although, we think that most fans will simply refer to it as Starfleet Academy without the brand name attached. We also imagine in the greater Star Trek fandom the name of the show will be shortened even further to ST:SA.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s Plot

Starfleet Academy recruitment announcement, getting ready for a whole new class.
Paramount+

The new series is a spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, and will take place in the 32nd Century, some 800 years after the time of Star Trek: Picard. After a period of 100 years where the Federation dwindled to a handful of worlds, and Starfleet was a small operation, Starfleet Academy will introduce the first class of cadets in a century. Below is the official description from Paramount+:

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will introduce us to a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.

Behind-the-Scenes

Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau will serve as co-showrunners for Starfleet Academy. Gaia Violo wrote the series pilot. Kurtzman of course is the head honcho for all things in the Star Trek universe on Paramount+, including Discovery, Strange New Worlds, and Picard.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s Cast

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has a robust cast, headlined by Academy Award winner Holly Hunter. She’ll be the captain and chancellor of Starfleet Academy, presumably still located in San Francisco. She’s the third woman to headline her own Star Trek series, after Kate Mulgrew and Sonequa Martin-Green. The series’ main villain is none other than Paul Giamatti, who plays “A man with an ominous past connected to one of our cadets.”

Speaking of the cadets, in the roles of the student body we’ve got Karim Diané, Zoë Steiner, Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, and Sandro Rosta. Legacy actors from Star Trek: Discovery joining the series include Tig Notaro, Oded Fehr, and Mary Wiseman. The biggest surprise in terms of legacy Trek actors is Star Trek: Voyager‘s Robert Picardo. He returns as the Emergency Medical Holographic doctor.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Release Date

There is no release date yet for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, but it’s expected in the latter half of 2025 on Paramount+. Presumably, it will drop some months after Star Trek: Strange New Worlds wraps up its third season.

The Dexterenaissance continues. The return of the infamous serial killer continues with Dexter: Original Sin, a Paramount+ with SHOWTIME series which will take us back to the ‘90s to uncover more of his origin story. The series stars Patrick Gibson as Dexter and Christian Slater (one of my personal faves) as Harry Morgan, Dexter’s adoptive father and, interestingly, a homicide detective. Molly Brown is also a part of the Morgan family as his younger sister Debra Morgan. We got some first-look photos a while back and now we finally have our first look teaser trailer for Dexter: Original Sin

In it, Dexter says that he’s not a natural born killer but instead it took a village to lead him down his dark path. I must say, Gibson does capture the spirit of Dexter really well with his actions as we hear Michael C. Hall’s voice as his inner thoughts. Here’s a synopsis for Dexter: Original Sin to accompany this first teaser trailer:

Set in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original Sin follows Dexter (Patrick Gibson) as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer. When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry (Golden Globe® winner Christian Slater), he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcement’s radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department. Patrick Dempsey, Molly Brown, James Martinez, Christina Milian, Alex Shimizu, Reno Wilson and special guest star, Sarah Michelle Gellar also star in this new series, with Michael C. Hall returning to voice the iconic inner monologue in Dexter Morgan’s head.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is gearing up for its fifth and final season. While many fans are sad to say goodbye to the beloved Paramount+ animated series and its wacky band of characters aboard the U.S.S. Cerritos. In honor of Star Trek Day, the series gave fans a quick clip to see what will go down on those lower decks soon.

Here’s a quick synopsis of season five:

In season five of Star Trek: Lower Decks, the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos is tasked with closing “space potholes”—subspace rifts that are causing chaos in the Alpha Quadrant. Pothole duty would be easy for Junior Officers Mariner, Boimler, Tendi and Rutherford…if they didn’t also have to deal with an Orion war, furious Klingons, diplomatic catastrophes, murder mysteries and scariest of all: their own career aspirations. This upcoming season on Paramount+ is a celebration of this underdog crew who are dangerously close to being promoted out of the lower decks and into strange new Starfleet roles.

Star Trek: Lower Decks’ new clip makes us ready for the upcoming season. Thankfully, we don’t have to wait too long. The series will return on October 24 with two episodes. The remainder of the 10-episode season will have a weekly release format on Thursday. The series finale drops on December 19 to wrap up this journey for good.

The boys are returning for a new 2D animated series from Nickelodeon Animation for Paramount+. You can check out the trailer for the new Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles right here:

Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles takes place in the same continuity as Mutant Mayhem, and this 2D animated show “explores the adventures of everyone’s favorite pizza-loving heroes as they emerge from the sewers onto the streets of NYC. Leo, Raph, Donnie, and Mikey are faced with new threats and team up with old allies to survive both teenage life and villains lurking in the shadows of the Big Apple.”

Everything We Know About STAR TREK: SECTION 31 https://nerdist.com/article/everything-we-know-about-star-trek-section-31/ Mon, 29 Jul 2024 19:20:00 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=973037 Michelle Yeoh stars in Star Trek: Section 31, a film about the secret black ops branch of Starfleet, for Paramount+. Here's everything we know so far.

The post Everything We Know About STAR TREK: SECTION 31 appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

The upcoming film Star Trek: Section 31, starring Oscar Winner Michelle Yeoh, will bring back Emperor Philippa Georgiou, a character introduced in Star Trek: Discovery season one. Yeoh first played Captain Philippa Georgiou in the first part of Discovery, a decorated Starfleet Captain who died in the pilot episode. She then portrayed the version of that character from the darker Mirror Universe for much longer. Now stranded in the mainline Star Trek universe, she began working for the mysterious Federation spy cabal Section 31.

Star Trek: Section 31‘s trailer premiered during SDCC 2024 and it is a blast.

Here’s everything we know about Star Trek: Section 31 so far.

Title

Section 31 Begins Production with Michelle Yeoh
Paramount+

Although many refer to it as simply Section 31, the proper title is, of course, Star Trek: Section 31.

Star Trek: Section 31’s Plot

Michelle Yeoh as Emperor Philippa Georgiou Star TrekL Discovery
Paramount+

Although originally planned as a series, it has since morphed into a film for the Paramount+ streaming service. The plot for Section 31 is unknown at this time. All we know is that it’s likely set in the same timeframe as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. This would be some time after Discovery season two, and still several years before the events of the original series. At the end of Discovery season two, Phillipa Georgiou was sent to the far future with the Discovery crew. Not long after, the powerful Guardian of Forever sent her back to when she left. This leaves room for her Section 31 story to take place in that time period. The official description is as follows” “Tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, [Georgiou] also must face the sins of her past.”

Section 31 Agent Sloan (William Sadler) on Deep Space Nine.
CBS/Viacom

The franchise introduced Section 31 as a concept in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. They were an organization so secret, they were not an official part of the Federation or Starfleet. However, they acted on their behalf. Many in Starfleet saw Section 31 and their covert and often immoral ways as against what the Federation stood for. They attempted genocide on the shapeshifting Changeling race behind the Dominion during the later seasons of DS9. In Discovery, we learn they were more of an official part of Starfleet a century before the events of DS9. Perhaps the Section 31 movie will reconcile how this covert group went from a known part of Federation intelligence to something of a galactic myth a century later.

Kacey Rohl will play a young Rachel Garrett from The Next Generation in Star Trek Section 31
NBC/Paramount

Kacey Rohl will play “a young Rachel Garrett, a character first introduced on Star Trek: The Next Generation as the older fearless captain of the USS Enterprise-C.” Garrett appeared as captain of the Enterprise-C in Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s episode, “Yesterday’s Enterprise.”

Behind-The-Scenes

Olatunde Osunsanmi will direct and executive produce the film, with Craig Sweeny serving as writer and executive producer. Alex Kurtzman and his production company Secret Hideout, which is behind modern Star Trek shows like Discovery, Picard, and Strange New Worlds, is also behind Section 31.

Although we don’t yet have a release date for Star Trek: Section 31, we recently learned that movie wrapped filming. Cast member Robert Kazinsky revealed the news on his Instagram. On the heels of this Variety also shared our very first look at the Star Trek film. Hopefully that means we’ll see even more movement on the movie sooner rather than later.

Star Trek: Section 31’s Cast

Aside from Michelle Yeoh, also in the cast are Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl, Sam Richardson, Sven Ruygrok, Robert Kazinsky, Humberly Gonzalez, and James Hiroyuki Liao. No word yet on any known Star Trek franchise actors from Discovery or Strange New Worlds, but we expect to see at least some of them.

Star Trek: Section 31 Release Date

There’s no release date yet for Star Trek: Section 31, but we expect it no earlier than late 2025.

Another day, another streaming price increase. This time, it’s Paramount+ that will raise the prices on most of its tiers. Starting in August, Paramount+ subscribers can expect to pay a little more (again) to keep their access to the platform alive. Here’s how the price increases breakdown for Paramount+ this summer.

Captain Pike on the bridge of the Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for Paramount+ price increase article.
Paramount+

First, the company’s merged offering, Paramount+ with SHOWTIME, will see its price increase by $1. That means it will now cost $12.99 per month for existing and new customers. Meanwhile, the Paramount+ Essential plan will increase by $2 per month and will cost $7.99 per month overall. However, the price increase of this plan will only affect new subscribers. Existing customers who are subscribed to the Paramount+ Essential plan will retain their current price of $5.99. Paramount+’s Limited Commercial Plan, which is now a legacy plan on the platform, will also increase by $1 and will cost $7.99 per month.

Annual subscription plans to Paramount+ will not currently see an increase in price.

These Paramount+ price hikes will become effective on August 20 for all new Paramount+ customers. Meanwhile, existing customers will see changes take place on their next billing date on or after September 20.

Who is Yellowjackets Antler Queen
Showtime

Despite these increases in costs, it is worth noting that Paramount+ with SHOWTIME remains cheaper than most other streamers’ ad-free plans. And its ad-supported plans are comparably priced. However, as most streamers keep raising prices, that does not exactly say very much for Paramount+. Regardless of the cost of one streamer specifically, the endless stream of price increases and other streaming restrictions is probably unsustainable for Paramount+ and all other streamers. It seems that at one point, streamers were focused on providing a good user experience. However, since subscription numbers have become all but tapped out, the focus has turned to ads and price increases across the board, from Paramount+ to Max and beyond.

Ultimately, that begs the question, will users pay the price or simply opt out? Only time will tell.

Fans will have to wait a lot longer for the proposed Dungeons & Dragons live-action series. According to a report in Deadline, Paramount+ has decided not to go forward with the fantasy series. This news comes about a year and change since the streamer announced an eight-episode, straight-to-series order. This Dungeons & Dragons series was intended as a co-production between Hasbro’s eOne and Paramount Pictures. But this may not be the end for this adaptation of the iconic role-playing game. The series is undergoing a creative overhaul, and Hasbro is shopping the series to new potential buyers and streaming platforms.

Dungeons & Dragons is going to be a TV series, dragon fighting a knight
TSR/Hasbro

Dungeons & Dragons has gone through a few iterations as a live-action series in recent years, with none ever going before the cameras. Derek Kolstad, the creator behind John Wick, was developing a Dungeons & Dragons series for Paramount and Hasbro a few years back. This most recent version came from Rawson Marshall Thurber, who wrote the pilot for the Dungeons & Dragons TV series. It was also his plan to direct some episodes. Now, it’s back to the drawing board again. It’s unclear if elements from this recently proposed version will appear in whatever future iteration the project takes. We’ll just have to wait and see.

While the report doesn’t cite any particular reason, it’s possible budgets have played a part. Many cite Paramount’s financial issues as the reason that Star Trek: Legacy never received a greenlit, so it’s possible these issues have also impacted D&D. Others say it’s the underperformance of the excellent Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves at the box office. Yet Dungeons & Dragons is too famous an IP to never pique the interest of some other streamer though. It’s just a question of when, and just what form the series will take. For now, however, it’s swords and shields down.

Spoiler Alert

After five seasons and 65 episodes, Star Trek: Discovery has landed in dry dock. The first ever Star Trek streaming series has released its final episode, “Life, Itself.” And the finale has a coda that ties off the journey of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green). What a journey it has been. In the first episode, set in the 23rd century, Burnham (Spock’s adopted sister) is a mutineer whose actions landed her in the Starfleet prison. She joins Discovery‘s crew, and serves under several captains. Then, after time-traveling 900 years into the future, Michael Burnham becomes the Captain of Discovery herself. And now, we see where her life takes her decades later.

Michael Burnham met the man who would be the love of her life, the Kwejian Cleveland Booker (David Ajala), when she arrived in the 32nd Century. This was at the start of season three. The two became partners when Burnham became stranded in this strange future. She became a space courier with Booker, or “Book” for short. Eventually, they became romantically involved, even after she became Captain of Discovery. Over the course of the last three seasons, the pair had their ups and downs. They even split up for a time. But in the series finale, the two recommitted their love for one another. This was at the wedding of Captain Saru (Doug Jones) and the Vulcan President T’Rina (Tara Rosling).

Admiral Burnham Is Married to Booker, and They Have an Adult Son in Starfleet

Paramount+

Then, Star Trek: Discovery drops a bombshell on us. We flash forward decades into the future. We see that Burnham and Booker are now married, living in a country home on a remote alien planet. As Michael wakes up to get her morning coffee, Book follows her, and in their conversation, it’s revealed that today is a big day for her. She’s now Admiral Burnham, and a shuttle is coming to take her to a special ceremony. When the shuttle arrives, a young man beams down, played by Sawandi Wilson. He reveals himself as the son of Burnham and Booker. He’s also in Starfleet, and is about to get his own command and starship. He appears as “Captain Leto” in the credits, although they never refer to him by name. He looks about thirty, meaning she and Booker have been married for at least three decades or more in these scenes.

Michael Burnham Takes Command of Discovery One Last Time

Booker stays behind on the alien world, and mother and son go to Starfleet HQ together. In typical Trek fashion, they have a new uniform design. They talk together on the shuttle about Burnham’s friend Tilly, who is now the longest-tenured instructor at Starfleet Academy. We don’t really find out what became of the rest of Discovery’s crew, although we see a montage of them together in younger days. Once they get to Starfleet HQ, we see that they are reverting Discovery to its original 23rd-century mode, with the letter “A” removed from its registry number.

Michael Burnham beams aboard Discovery, now an empty ghost vessel, and talks to Zora, Discovery’s sentient AI system. They embark on one final mission together. It’s a secret “Red Directive” mission, where Discovery will await a ship of unknown origin for a thousand years. Upon reaching the coordinates, Burnham will disembark, while Zora awaits the mysterious vessel. Zora realizes that after this mission, she and Burnham won’t ever see each other again. Burnham says her famous catchphrase one last time as they go to warp — “Let’s fly.”

Will Michael Burnham Return in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy?

Paramount+

Will we follow up on this future version of Michael Burnham? It depends on exactly when the new Starfleet Academy series takes place. It might happen concurrently with the elder Michael Burnham we see in the Discovery epilogue. What we do know is that after many hardships, Admiral Michael Burnham led a fulfilled and fruitful life, something she could never have foreseen for herself in the series’ original episode, when she was an outcast mutineer, shunned by almost every member of Starfleet. Admiral Michael Burnham has had a journey unlike any Starfleet commander, or Star Trek series lead, before her.

After seven years and five seasons, Star Trek: Discovery has ended with the episode “Life Itself.” As the series headed into the homestretch, the writers decided to reveal one prominent character on the series has actually been around for a lot longer than most Star Trek fans watching ever knew. While the main overarching plotline this season has ties to Star Trek: The Next Generation, the final episode revealed that a character who has been on Discovery since season three has ties to the prequel series Star Trek: Enterprise. And that character is Dr. Kovich, portrayed by legendary film director David Cronenberg.

Paramount+

At the climax of the last episode, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) solves the season-long mystery of the Progenitors. These are the ancient beings that seeded life in the galaxy. Burnham decides their advanced technology is too dangerous to be in the hands of any sentient beings in the galaxy to study, including the Federation. She has a meeting with the bespectacled Dr. Kovich, who has been a mysterious figure since Discovery’s third season, when the crew arrived in the 32nd century from the 23rd. It is unknown what his exact position is within the Federation or Starfleet. Yet he was able to issue a “Red Directive” this season, supplanting the authority of even the highest Starfleet admiral.

Dr. Kovich Is Really Agent Daniels From Star Trek: Enterprise

Kovich, not the warmest person in the cosmos, congratulates Burnham on a job well done. As she looks around his office, she sees many historical items familiar to Star Trek fans. There’s a bottle of Jean Luc Picard’s family wine, and Geordi La Forge’s original visor. A baseball, presumably belonging to Deep Space Nine’s Captain Ben Sisko, is also among the items. He had previously mentioned a love of history in previous episodes. Burnham then realizes something — Kovich is a code name. She asks him to reveal who he is, and he says he’s lived “many lives.” He tells her that his name is Agent Daniels, of the U.S.S. Enterprise, and “other places.” This reveals him as an older version of a character who played a key role in Star Trek: Enterprise, which ran from 2001-2005.

Star Trek: Discovery Addresses the Temporal Wars From Enterprise

Agent Daniel (Matt Winston) on Star Trek: Enterprise.
Paramount Television

One of the main plot points in the early seasons of Enterprise was the Temporal Wars. Although Enterprise took place in the late 22nd century, it was a key period for this conflict. The Temporal Wars were a conflict that spanned centuries, with different factions fighting to control their version of the timeline. Agents from many sides appeared in different key moments in history, hoping to bend events to their preferred outcomes. These factions had to abide by the Temporal Accord, although more than once, they broke the Accord.

Agent Daniels (Matt Winston) confronts Captain Archer (Scott Bakula) on Star Trek: Enterprise.
Paramount Television

Daniels is a temporal agent from the 31st century who appears aligned with Earth/the Federation. The time-traveling Daniels appeared in eight episodes across four seasons, first posing as a crewman on the Enterprise NX-01 in the 22nd century. After several fakeout deaths, he eventually reveals to Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) that he is from 900 years in the future. They sent him back in time to make sure history flows properly, as an agent of the Temporal Wars. Among these tasks is assuring Captain Archer helps guide events toward the formation of the United Federation of Planets, among other things.

Discovery Shows What Became of Dr. Kovich After the Temporal Wars

Dr. Kovich in Star Trek: Discovery.
Paramount+

Daniels was portrayed as a man in his thirties, and the time period of his birth was given as the 31st century. It’s implied that the 31st century is the launch point of the wars. The only mention of the Temporal Wars on Discovery came early in season three. It’s revealed to Burnham that time travel is now banned, as a fallout of the Temporal Wars a century earlier. So they couldn’t simply travel back in time to their era, they were stuck now in the 32nd century. It’s during this era that the Discovery crew met the elderly gentleman and Starfleet representative named Kovich, who sent them on several missions. Now we know that Kovich is really an older version of Daniels, who survived the Temporal Wars to help guide the Federation into a new era.

Will Dr. Kovich Appear in Starfleet Academy?

Although Kovich looks like a man in his seventies or eighties, he is clearly much older. We’re not sure what this reveal means for the future of Star Trek, if anything. It may just be a fun Easter egg for fans of Enterprise. However, it does tie in the two series in a neat way. It also addresses a plot point from Enterprise many had believed forgotten. With Starfleet Academy taking place roughly in this time period, who knows, we might see Daniels/Kovich again. That is, should David Cronenberg choose to reprise the role. There is still much we don’t know about the Temporal Wars, and maybe we’ll learn more in Starfleet Academy. Maybe the Temporal Wars are a course the students take? If Kovich is an instructor, then sign us up for class.

One beloved series in the Star Trek franchise is set to continue boldly going, while one is coming to an end. Paramount+ revealed that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, currently in production for its third season, will return for season four. The streamer also announced that the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks will conclude its run with the upcoming season five. Season five, the final season of Lower Decks, premieres this fall. This means two Trek series are ending this year, as Star Trek: Discovery is also wrapping up at the end of the current season.

In a statement, CBS Studios President David Staff said the following:

Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds are integral to the Star Trek franchise, expanding the boundaries of the universe and exploring new and exciting worlds. We are extraordinarily proud of both series as they honor the legacy of what Gene Roddenberry created almost 60 years ago. We are so grateful to work with Secret Hideout, Alex Kurtzman, Mike McMahan, Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and the cast, crews and artists who craft these important and entertaining stories for fans around the world.

Right now, it feels like the Star Trek franchise is contracting and not expanding. Both Discovery and Lower Decks are ending after five seasons. In the modern streaming era though, most view five seasons as a decent run. Paramount+ canceled Prodigy, but its second season found a home on Netflix. A third season remains in doubt. Section 31 went from series to film. Picard ended on a high note with season three. Yet there has been no news about a proposed follow-up series, Star Trek: Legacy. The only other live-action Star Trek series going into production soon is Starfleet Academy. All of this may have more to do with Paramount’s financial uncertainty than anything else. However, if Star Trek has proven to be anything over nearly 58 years, it’s that it will survive any studio downturn.

The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated film Mutant Mayhem made quite a splash. However, before it was even released, Paramount felt very confident in it. The studio revealed plans for a two-season series that will bridge the gap between Mutant Mayhem and its greenlit sequel. This new sequel movie doesn’t have a name yet, but the streaming show has the title Tales of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The series will release in summer of 2024. And the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle: Mutant Mayhem sequel will arrive on October 9, 2026.

Jeff Rowe, who also directed and co-wrote Mutant Mayhem will direct the movie sequel. Chris Yost (The Mandalorian, Thor: Ragnarok) and Alan Wan (Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series) will serve as executive producers and showrunners. Lukas Williams will oversee both the series and sequel for Point Grey Pictures. This is the company of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who’ve also brought us The Boys and soon, Gen V. The last few live-action projects with the Turtles didn’t land as expected. It seems Paramount is really looking at animation as the Turtles’ future.

Returning from Mutant Mayhem for the Paramount+ series are Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu, and Brady Noon as the turtles. According to the official description for the series, the heroes in a half shell will be challenged like never before. Leo, Raph, Donnie, and Mikey each choose to forge a path alone for the first time. New dangers will await them, but they’ll also reunite with old friends to take on new threats. The Turtles will discover who they really are when they don’t have their brothers at their sides.

The new streaming series will premiere in summer of 2024, just in time for the Turtles’ 40th anniversary. And we’re excited to see Mutant Mayhem‘s sequel in 2026.

It’s the end of an era. Star Trek: Discovery, which launched the Star Trek franchise into the streaming era, is ending after five seasons and seven years. Now we have our final trailer for this last adventure, which features the crew saying their goodbyes. Like previous seasons, the final year of Star Trek: Discovery will focus on a season-long mystery; a mystery that Captain Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew must solve. You can watch the trailer for the last season of Star Trek: Discovery, which begins on April 4, right here:

In this trailer, we see that Starfleet director Dr. Kovich, played by the iconic David Cronenberg, has a new galactic mystery for the Discovery crew to solve. It’s another cosmic puzzle that unlocks some kind of ancient power. The Star Trek Discovery final season trailer gives us some Indiana Jones vibes, only in space. We think we might see the symbol of the Terran Empire on board one of the ships in this trailer. Star Trek fans know the Terran Empire as the “evil Federation” from the Mirror Universe. Yes, that’s the same Mirror Universe that Michelle Yeoh’s Phillipa Georgiou is from. It seems they might play a part in Discovery‘s final season.

Captain Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Saru (Doug Jones) share an emotional moment in Star Trek: Discovery's final season.
Paramount+

Since season three, Discovery has taken place in the 32nd Century, nearly a millennium from where the show started. In the first two seasons, Discovery was a prequel to the original Star Trek, taking place a decade before the adventures of Kirk and Spock on the Enterprise. The spin-off series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds still occupies this timeframe. But the future Star Trek: Discovery now takes place in is a galaxy where the Federation dwindled to a few core worlds after a disastrous cosmic event, and Starfleet is in rebuilding mode. We’ll see if by the end of the series, Discovery takes the Federation back to its full glory.

The first chapter of the final season of Star Trek: Discovery drops on Paramount+ on April 4.

How is an Echidna warrior stuck on Earth because of a sacred vow supposed supposed to fill all his free time? Star in his own spinoff TV series, obviously. Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s super powerful red alien is coming to Paramount+, and the first trailer for the upcoming Knuckles series reveals that he doesn’t need to build his own living room/fighter pit. Not when there are plenty of other dangerous enemies out to get him.

Idris Elba is officially back as Knuckles in this fun trailer. (As is ESPN 8, The Ocho!) After helping his friends in his big-screen debut Knuckles is getting his own six-episode special event. (Which takes place after Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and before the series’ upcoming third film.) The live-action spinoff series will follow Knuckles “on a hilarious and action-packed journey of self-discovery as he agrees to train Wade (Adam Pally) as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior.”

We learn in this trailer, that when not fighting, Knuckles will also enjoy some human snacks and coffee. Good for him. He might be intense, but even the greatest fighters need to some me-time occasionally, you know?

The show also features an incredible supporting cast. It includes Stockard Channing (The West Wing), Edi Patterson (The Righteous Gemstones), Scott Mescudi (Don’t Look Up), Ellie Taylor (Ted Lasso), Julian Barratt (Mindhorn), Rory McCann (Game of Thrones), Cary Elwes (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future), Paul Scheer (Black Monday), and Rob Huebel (Childrens Hospital).

Elba and Pally aren’t the only franchise stars back for more fun, either. Ben Schwartz will appear as the expanding cinematic universe’s leader, Sonic in the Knuckles series. Special guest star Tika Sumpter will also return as Maddie. And Colleen O’Shaughnessey will pop up to voice Tails once more.

Fans of the Sonic franchise can also keep an eye out for another new Knuckles trailer during this year’s Super Bowl. Then we’ll have to wait until this spring to see the show. All six episodes of Knuckles will premiere on Friday, April 26, exclusively on Paramount+ in the US. Sadly there’s no way to speed that release date up. So maybe just brew a pot of coffee and turn on The Ocho until then.

With the Super Bowl fast approaching, this also means the star-studded Super Bowl ads are also on their way. And one has just dropped a bit early, for the Paramount+ streaming service. It features a bevy of their most prominent stars, at the foot of the icy canyons below Paramount Mountain. Front and center is Admiral Jean Luc Picard himself, Sir Patrick Stewart. Joining him is Drew Barrymore, Thomas Lennon as Reno 911’s Lt. Dangle, Master Chief from Halo, Arnold of Hey Arnold!, Peppa Pig, Dora, Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba), Jeff Probst from Survivor, and Miami Dolphins Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Oh, and musical accompaniment from Creed. Because sure, why not? You can watch the full ad right here:

Admit it, you never knew you needed to see Sir Patrick sing along to Creed hits from the ’90s until now. Patrick Stewart is always so serious whenever we see him on screen, especially in his Star Trek role as Jean Luc Picard. So it’s fun to see him just get goofy and just mug for the camera like this. Stewart returns to Paramount Mountain after appearing in the first “A Mountain of Entertainment” spot that launched during the Super Bowl three years ago. However, we hope next time, he will bring some of his Enterprise cohorts with him. We all know they’d be game to get a little silly, especially Brent Spiner as Data.

This ad is the 15th installment of the Paramount+ streaming service’s “A Mountain of Entertainment” brand campaign. It’s also their third Super Bowl spot overall. This year, Paramount+ will be streaming Super Bowl LVIII on February 11, hence the actual football theme. Hopefully, next time (assuming there is a next time), nobody throws poor Arnold around. Can’t they bring back Beavis and Butthead and throw them around instead? They have it coming more than poor Arnold does.

Showtime Cable Channel Will Officially Become Paramount+ With Showtime in January https://nerdist.com/article/showtime-and-paramount-merging-across-streaming-and-network-linear-channels/ Mon, 11 Dec 2023 16:25:00 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=940604 Showtime and Paramount have merged across streaming and network television to create a brand new offering, Paramount+ with Showtime.

The post Showtime Cable Channel Will Officially Become Paramount+ With Showtime in January appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

It’s the age of change, and it’s enough to make your head spin. Streaming platforms and network television have been at odds since their inception. By and large, streaming is now a part of most people’s everyday lives, but despite rumors of its demise, network and cable TV continues to hang in there. But that doesn’t mean everything stays just the same, as we saw on Deadline. In a mind-bending move, the Paramount+ streaming channel and the Showtime network channel merged together to create two platforms named Paramount+ with Showtime. This merge officially happened on the streaming side of things as of June 27. And now, the Showtime cable channel will officially become the Paramount+ with Showtime channel beginning on January 8, 2024.

Paramount+ and Showtime are merging to create Paramount+ with showtime (1)
Paramount

Of course, this will impact the content available from both platforms as the trend of removing series and movies continues… And it will impact the subscription price consumers will have to pay. Confused yet? Let’s break it down.

Jump To: What Is Paramount+ with Showtime? // Subscription Costs for the Streamer // Content Removals and Changes

Paramount+ with Showtime to Replace Separate Streamers and Showtime Channel

On the streaming side, there was once the Showtime streaming service and the Paramount+ streaming service. But now, these products have come together to create Paramount+ with Showtime (the streamer). The premium tiers of Paramount+ with Showtime have Showtime content available alongside Paramount+ content. And, officially, the standalone Showtime app will cease to exist by the end of this year.

Meanwhile, Showtime is also currently a cable network. However, Showtime as a channel will no longer exist on cable starting this January and it will instead rebrand to Paramount+ with Showtime (the TV channel). On that end, the TV network’s profile will receive a boost by also airing “Paramount+ originals in addition to the SHOWTIME originals, as well as Paramount Pictures movies that come to the services.”

Variety notes that those subscribed to the linear TV version of Paramount+ with Showtime will not have access to the streaming version of the product with the same name. While linear TV users “will be able to access programming online via the authenticated streaming apps of pay-TV partners” they will not have full access to the streaming version of Paramount+ with Showtime. We’re starting to feel like two different names could have been useful here.

Showtime will officially become Paramount+ with Showtime on January 8, 2024.

Subscription Price Increases for Paramount+ with Showtime

Paramount+ with Showtime (the streaming platform) will see a price increase from Paramount+’s current cost. The premium tier, which previously cost $9.99 on Paramount+ has risen to $11.99 for Paramount+ with Showtime’s ad-free offering. Of course, this will contain both Paramount+ and Showtime content. And, it is important to note, the price of Paramount+ with Showtime remains lower than the previous cost of purchasing both platforms.

Meanwhile, the essential Paramount+ plan, which contains ads and will not include Showtime content, will see its subscription cost increase from $4.99 a month to $5.99.

Paramount+ with Showtime subscribers should note that another price increase for the platform is on the horizon. Per Variety, Paramount CEO Bob Bakish recently shared, “Our plan is to raise price again, this isn’t our only price increase. Whether we do that in ’25, or we do that in ’24, we’ll see… Again, early days, as we evaluate the cost impact of the price increase, but we believe there’s a lot of room to run there.”

Bakish further noted of Paramount+ with Showtime’s initial increase. “We just effectuated our first price increase. It is very much performing according to plan… There was some question out there, if it would adversely affect churn in a significant way and if we’re bringing down subscriber acquisition. And the fact matter is, we’re not seeing that. So that proves that we have pricing power in the marketplace, given the content we’re bringing to bear on the platform.”

Just how far that pricing power will go remains to be seen.

Content Changes for Paramount+ with Showtime

Yellowjackets is queer TV - the cannibal clan by the fire
Paul Sarkis/Showtime

Content-wise, cancellations at Showtime have begun to occur, according to Deadline. The shows Three Women, Let the Right One In, and American Gigolo are reportedly canceled or heading for cancellation. According to Deadline, Showtime has also officially scrapped the anticipated Gattaca series that was in the works. The series would have been based on the ’90s hit movie taking place a generation later. Showtime will also pass on the Mandy Patinkin comedy Seasoned and several other shows.

Additionally, it was reported that Dexter: New Blood received a cancellation at Showtime. However, this may no longer be the case. Regardless of the fate that awaits New Blood, it sounds like a Dexter prequel series is coming. This Dexter outing will focus on a younger version of the character. Executive Chris McCarthy notes, “The origin story will be set in Dexter’s hometown of Miami, and will touch on stories of real-life serial killers of the time period.” Additional Dexter spinoff series could also hit the new streamer. These could focus on “the back stories of compelling Dexter characters,” including one featuring the Trinity Killer.

Meanwhile, Paramount+ is also removing content from its platform. Per Deadline, among other things, Jordan Peele’s The Twilight Zone, which ran for two seasons, is no longer available on the platform. Also missing are The Real World: Homecoming, Coyote, No Activity, Guilty Party, and The Harper House. And the content purges are continuing. By far one of the most shocking decisions made by Paramount+ was to cancel and remove Star Trek: Prodigy from its platform. The series hopes to find life elsewhere, but the decision came with loud fan outcry. The GameGrease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, and Queen of the Universe also met a similar fate.

Kathryn Janeway, front and center of the new crew from the series Star Trek: Profigy.

For the moment, our personal favorite Showtime offering, Yellowjackets, seems thankfully safe. According to executive Chris McCarthy, it exemplifies one of Showtime’s strengths (complex characters) alongside shows like Billions.

Now that we’ve mostly wrapped our heads around this change, we’ll have to wait and see what these latest landscape shenanigans bring to all of us. We’ll cross our fingers for only good things.

The Covenant will attack in February.

In 2022 Paramount+ delivered the Halo adaptation fans of the video game franchise had long waited for. The war with the Covenant is far from over, though. The show is returning for a second season, and now we know exactly when it will arrive. The streaming site announced the Halo series will return with two episodes of season two on Thursday, February 8, 2024. And Paramount+ made that announcement in style during a panel at CCXP23 in São Paolo, Brazil. That’s where the streamer shared a brand new trailer that shows humanity is in more danger than ever before.

It won’t be hard to “remember” this trailer. It’s an intense and ominous tease at the horrors that await Earth’s fiercest warriors. What exactly is going on? Here’s Halo season two’s official synopsis:

In season two, Master Chief John-117 leads his team of elite Spartans against the alien threat known as the Covenant. In the wake of a shocking event on a desolate planet, John cannot shake the feeling that his war is about to change and risks everything to prove what no one else will believe – that the Covenant are preparing to attack humanity’s greatest stronghold. With the galaxy on the brink, John embarks on a journey to find the key to humankind’s salvation, or its extinction — the Halo.

The new season will see the return of stars Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief, Spartan-117, and Natascha McElhone as Dr. Halsey. Joining them once again are Jen Taylor as Cortana, Bokeem Woodbine, Shabana Azmi, Natasha Culzac, Olive Gray, Yerin Ha, Bentley Kalu, Kate Kennedy, Charlie Murphy, and Danny Sapani.

Season two of Halo will also mark the debut of new cast members. Joseph Morgan (Vampire Diaries) will play James Ackerson. He’s “a formidable intelligence operative who has spent his career climbing the ranks of the UNSC’s secretive Office of Naval Intelligence.” Cristina Rodlo (No One Gets Out of Here Alive) will also join the show as Talia Perez. Talia is “a corporal specializing in linguistics for a UNSC Marine Corps communications unit and a relatively new recruit who has yet to see any real combat.”

New episodes of season two will follow every week after the two-episode Halo premiere on February 8. Assuming humanity lasts that long.

Paramount+’s newest trailer welcomes you back to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger, for Good Burger 2. Sure, that might be a mouthful to say, but at least it was written by a human. Dexter and Ed won’t be lucky enough to deal with actual people in the sequel to their beloved 1997 kid’s comedy. A big corporation wants to turn their jobs over to robots. But as we all know, while he’s a dude, and she’s a dude, machines aren’t. And they definitely aren’t as funny. Take a look at the official trailer for Good Burger 2 below.

More than 25 years after All That‘s best buds went from TV to the big screen, Good Burger‘s most famous employees are back on the job. At least temporarily. Their reunion doesn’t go as planned when Dex inadvertently sends them both to the unemployment line. Here’s the official synopsis of Good Burger 2 that Paramount+ released with the movie’s trailer:

The highly anticipated film sequel follows Dexter Reed (Kenan Thompson) and original cashier Ed (Kel Mitchell) as they reunite in the present day at fast-food restaurant Good Burger with a hilarious new group of employees. In Good Burger 2, Dexter Reed is down on his luck after another one of his inventions fails. Ed welcomes Dex back to Good Burger with open arms and gives him his old job back. With a new crew working at Good Burger, Dex devises a plan to get back on his feet but unfortunately puts the fate of Good Burger at risk once again.

The sequel also features Lil Rel Howery, Jillian Bell, Kamaia Fairburn, Alex R. Hibbert, Fabrizio Guido, Elizabeth Hinkler, Emily Hinkler, and Anabel Graetz. The film will also mark the return of original Good Burger stars Josh Server, Lori Beth Denberg, and Carmen Electra. And as this Good Burger 2 trailer reveals, we’re also getting served up some famous celebrity cameos.

Not that we need them. Just getting Dex and Ed back together is enough for us. So long as it’s the human thems and not robot thems. Machines are not dudes, dude.

Good Burger 2 debuts at Paramount+ on November 22. That’s also where you can stream all four seasons of All That and the 1997 film.

When a studio like A24 comes out with a project called The Curse, you’d probably expect something a little bit more in the vein of Talk to Me. But A24’s The Curse is actually an upcoming TV series from Showtime and Paramount+. It’s co-created and executive-produced by Benny Safdie and Nathan Fielder. The Curse is “a genre-bending series that explores how an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple, Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder, as they try to conceive a child while co-starring in their new home-improvement show.” You can see the first key art for The Curse, as well as watch the first trailer for the series, right here:

The Curse is a ten-episode series, but its trailer paints a pretty good picture of what’s to come. The series premieres on streaming and on demand for Paramount+ subscribers with the Paramount+ with Showtime plan on Friday, November 10. After that, it will make its on-air debut on Showtime on Sunday, November 12, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The Curse has its world premiere at the 2023 New York Film Festival on Thursday, October 12. There, the first three episodes of its run will be screened.

Showtime/Paramount+

In its first trailer, The Curse looks to at least partially parody the reality TV “home-flipping show” craze, a trend that consumes basic cable television these days. In this new series, the HGTV-style show of couple Asher and Whitney Siegel (Stone and Fielder) goes by the name Flipanthropy. The premise is that they flip houses in lower-income neighborhoods, supposedly intending to help the residents. But judging from The Curse‘s trailer, the duo mostly want to garner ratings for their new series and hope to achieve fame. Then, a cringe-worthy incident with a local child happens on camera. And it sends their whole reality TV endeavor into a tailspin. Especially as the child in question actually places a curse on them. We genuinely can’t wait to see the glorious train wreck unfold.

PET SEMATARY: BLOODLINES Trailer Gives Us a Prequel to the Stephen King Classic https://nerdist.com/article/pet-sematary-bloodlines-trailer-prequel-movie-to-stephen-king-classic/ Tue, 12 Sep 2023 22:23:50 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=957929 Just in time for Halloween season, we have a trailer for the prequel to the Stephen King's Pet Sematary, coming to Paramount+.

After the financial success of the remake of Pet Sematary in 2019, some sort of continuation was inevitable. Even if Stephen King’s original novel had no continuation to speak of. That certainly didn’t stop the makers of the original 1989 film from making Pet Sematary II back in the day. But this time, for Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, instead of a sequel, they’re going the prequel route. We have our first trailer for the film, which premieres at this year’s Fantastic Fest, before dropping on Paramount+ in October. You can check out the creeptastic trailer for Pet Sematary: Bloodlines below:

This prequel takes place in the year 1969. It focuses on a younger version of the Jud Crandall character from the novel. Fans probably remember Jud Crandall as the old man who gives all the information about the burial ground to the original story’s lead, Louis Creed. Jud also utters the original movie’s most famous line, “Sometimes, dead is better.” In this prequel, Jud is still a young man, and dreams of escaping his hometown of Ludlow, Maine. That is until he discovers the dark secrets of what lies buried in a nearby ancient cemetery. Jud will come face to face with the family legacy that connects him to Ludlow. This sets him up for his future in the original Stephen King story.

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is directed by Lindsey Anderson Beer, who co-wrote it with Jeff Buhler. Buhler wrote the 2019 remake film. The movie stars Jackson White as the younger Jud Crandall, as well as Jack Mulhern, Natalie Alyn Lind, Forrest Goodluck, and Isabella Star LaBlanc. A few notable veteran actors in the film include Pam Grier, Samantha Mathis, Henry Thomas, and David Duchovny.

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines hits Paramount+ on October 6, just in time for the spooky season.

The Sonic the Hedgehog live-action renaissance continues with Knuckles, a Paramount+ series with Idris Elba reprising his role as the red ball of Echidna fury. Well, he’s not so angry now but don’t test him. We’ve known about the Knuckles spinoff series for a while; however, we are finally getting some new casting information. Not only is Tika Sumpter reprising her role as Maddie in the Knuckles TV series, but Adam Pally will also join the cast as Wade Whipple. In case you forgot, he’s a Green Hills police officer and Tom’s BFF.

Knuckles in Sonic 2
Paramount Pictures

According to Variety, Knuckles will take place between the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the upcoming third installment. The next Sonic adventure will hit theaters on December 20, 2024. In this series, Wade will become Knuckle’s protégé as he learns “the ways of the Echidna warrior.” Why is this happening? We don’t know, and we do not care. We just want to see more Knuckles on our screen, especially if he is playing base of ball. It’s not clear when this series will drop, but it is in production as of April 2023. So maybe we will see it later this year or even early next year.

We don’t know if James Marsden will reprise his role as Tom or not, but a few others are joining Sumpter. The Knuckles series cast includes Edi Patterson, Scott Mescudi (known as Kid Cudi), Ellie Taylor, Rory McCann, Christopher Lloyd, Cary Elwes, Paul Scheer, Stockard Channing, and Rob Huebel. Either way, Knuckles is back on the scene and getting the solo love that he so deserves (no shade to Sonic) in his own spinoff series.

Verizon Bundle Combines Netflix and Paramount+ at a Lower Price https://nerdist.com/article/verizon-rival-streamers-bundle-combines-netflix-and-paramount-at-a-lower-price-first-streaming-bundling-of-its-kind/ Thu, 01 Jun 2023 17:40:40 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=951066 Verizon is offering a streaming bundle which combines the services of rival streaming platforms Netflix and Paramount+ at a lower cost.

It’s happening… Everything old is new again. Predictions of streaming platforms bundling their services, as cable first did, bubbled up in the landscape for a long time. And although we have seen certain kinds of streaming bundles emerge, primarily between streamers owned by the same companies, we haven’t yet seen that kind of prophesied bundling… At least, until now. Verizon has introduced a streaming bundle between rival streamers Netflix and Paramount+. Of course, this offer is exclusive to customers of Version Wireless in the US. This bundle will allow users to purchase Netflix Premium and Paramount+ With Showtime at a lower price than subscribing individually to both streamers.

Verizon Bundle Combines Netflix and Paramount+ at a Lower Price_1
Paramount+/Netflix

According to Variety, those Verizon customers who subscribe to the bundle will pay $25.99/month for Netflix Premium and Paramount+ With Showtime. On its own, Netflix Premium is $19.99/month, an incredibly expensive option. Meanwhile, Paramount+ With Showtime costs $11.99/month. All told, the new Netflix and Paramount+ bundle will save subscribers $5.99/month, which works out to be nearly 20% savings. When we look on the scale of years, that’s a lot of money saved.

The Paramount+ and Netflix combo is good deal, but it definitely flips a page in the streaming landscape. We wonder how many bundles we’ll soon see forming and whether their existence will ultimately help or hurt the consumer. After all, cable bundles seemed to become hugely unpopular after a time. And, essentially, we’re seeing that happen again here with streamer bundles. Still, it must be said that the amount of streamers and subscriptions one needs to keep up with all the media releasing is immense. Perhaps bundles done right could offer a relief from that. If you’re a Verizon customer who watches both Netflix and Paramount+, you’ll welcome this option and its lower price point.

Jean-Luc Picard and William Riker certainly get themselves into some situations. Or maybe we should say situations find them. Whatever the case, the duo has placed the USS Titan into quite the pickle in season three of Star Trek: Picard. While diverting from the Starfleet vessel to locate and help Dr. Beverly Crusher, Riker and Picard pulled the ship into battle with the Shrike and its mysterious leader Vadic. This exclusive clip from Star Trek: Picard‘s third episode, “Seventeen Seconds,” shows just how outmatched the Titan is.

So, Captain Shaw isn’t thrilled. It’s hard to blame him for being mad. Despite their near-legend status within Starfleet, Picard and Riker have a reputation. They’re not legends because they have chill, calm missions. Here, their actions put the Titan in the sights of the very well-armed Shrike. Poor Shaw has big “I’m not even supposed to be here today” energy.

The clip shows the Shrike dealing the Titan a damaging hit. It incapacitates Shaw and he transfers command of the vessel to Riker. Riker and Picard have to get the ship and its crew out of imminent danger. It makes our hearts melt to hear Picard tell Riker, “It might be time you call me Number One.”

Having our favorite characters from The Next Generation in season three of Star Trek: Picard has led to plenty of nostalgic moments like this. More are undoubtedly on the way. Seeing our old friends together again feels right. And so far, it’s making for one heck of an entertaining story.

New episodes of Star Trek: Picard arrive on Paramount+ on Thursdays. Episode three, “Seventeen Seconds,” premieres on March 2.

What kid doesn’t dream of waking up someday and discovering they’re actually a superhero? If that’s not possible, though, there are other ways to find out life is way cooler than you thought. For example, you can discover your dad is actually a superhero himself. That’s the premise for Secret Headquarters, Paramount+‘s upcoming family-friendly action film starring Owen Wilson. But the movie’s first trailer shows why you should definitely make sure your kid stays out of your hidden underground layer full of alien technology. Especially when sinister forces are looking to steal them.

Super powers aren’t real. (We’re fairly certain.) But Walker Scobell sure does get to pretend they are a lot. He played the childhood version of Ryan Reynolds time-traveling warrior in The Adam Project. And he recently got tabbed to star as the demigod Percy Jackson in the upcoming Disney+ series based on the young adult novels. Now he’ll play a kid who learns his absentee father is actually saving the world when he’s away on business. With no one home to stop him and his friends, though, they’re going to cause some big problems when they start using his dad’s secret tech. Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

While hanging out after school, Charlie and his friends discover the headquarters of the world’s most powerful superhero hidden beneath his home. When villains attack, they must team up to defend the headquarters and save the world.

Paramount+

Secret Headquarters is the latest from co-directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (Project Power, Nerve, Catfish). It also stars Jesse Williams (Take Me Out), Keith L. Williams (Good Boys), Momona Tamada (The Baby-Sitters Club), Abby James Witherspoon (Hot Pursuit), and Kezii Curtis (Charm City Kings). And standing opposite Wilson’s superhero dad as his main enemy is fellow Marvel alum Michael Peña.

That’s why we’re really jealous of all these kids. Finding out your parent is actually the world’s greatest hero is cool. But hanging out with Owen Wilson and Michael Peña isn’t far behind.

Secret Headquarters comes exclusively to Paramount+ on August 12.

Meet The BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD Multiverse In Revival Movie Clip https://nerdist.com/article/new-beavis-and-butt-head-revival-movie-paramount-plus/ Mon, 06 Jun 2022 18:30:00 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=862142 Beavis and Butt-Head are getting a brand new revival movie on Paramount+. In it, Beavis and Butt-Head take on time, space, and maybe reality.

The post Meet The BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD Multiverse In Revival Movie Clip appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Can you smell that? Yes. That scent of VHS tapes and jelly shoes. That’s ’90s nostalgia and it is coming for us all. First, The ’70s Show got rebooted with That ’90s ShowNext, Warheads got a hard seltzer. Not to mention, Yellowjackets is bringing us all the way into those halcyon days. Well, that is not all folks. Because a Beavis and Butt-Head movie is heading to Paramount+. That’s right, Beavis and Butt-Head is getting a revival movie and possibly a few other things. And now, we have our first look at the revival movie and it’s… fascinating. And it possibly creates the Beavis and Butt-Head multiverse and we don’t know if anyone is ready for that.

According to the synopsis for the upcoming Beavis and Butt-Head revival movie, Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe, we’re getting Beavis and Butt-Head plus space, time-travel, and alternate universes. Which is a lot of Beavis and Butt-Head. But we guess traveling through the multiverse is in vogue these days. And who are we to stand in the way of adventure… Especially on that involves the Deep State and iPhone shenanigans.

In perhaps the dumbest space movie ever made, Beavis and Butt-head are sentenced to Space Camp by a “creative” judge in 1998, leading to a trip on the Space Shuttle, with predictably disastrous results. After going through a black hole, they reemerge in our time, where they look for love, misuse iPhones, and are hunted by the Deep State. Spoiler: They don’t score.

A new clip from the movie reveals one of the Beavis and Butt-Head variants we’ll meet, Smart Beavis and Smart Butt-Head. These versions of our main characters kind of remind us of The Watcher from the MCU. Definitely not our typical duo. They even use words like “droll” and “whimsical.”

And they let us know we’re actually looking at the Beavis and Butt-Head multiverse. The two explain, “In infinite universes, there are infinite iterations of every person. Every possible version of you exists.” A concept we are definitely, definitely not ready for. We don’t know what will happen if all the variants in this universe meet, but we know it will probably get messy.

If that wasn’t enough, we’ll even get to see Beavis and Butt-Head are all grown up. Yes. The multiverse is showing us the future of our leads. Strap in folks, this ride might be one very bumpy ride we’re about to go on. But go on it we will.

A Beavis and Butt-Head revival is coming to Paramount+ starring adult Beavis and But-Head
Paramount+

In its own words, Beavis and Butt-Head stars two “dumb, crude, ugly, thoughtless…fools. But for some reason the (boys) make us laugh.” And now they’ll greet us in their adult forms. Is this the energy we need in 2022? Hard to say. But we guess we will get it regardless. Hopefully, the show can grow with the times. Then again, maybe that won’t exactly be its calling. Both our leads look like they haven’t aged a day, in some ways. But looks can always deceive. That said, we did see the probing jokes in the revival trailer. So… we’ll just try to appreciate it for what it is.

We guess ’90s nostalgia means something for everyone. And, for some of us, that comes in the form of this duo. We do have to say, it seems sweet the pair stuck together after all this time. A true soul mate situation. And isn’t that really the best friend dream? Sticking together, braving the decades? Traveling through time and space itself together? Meeting older versions of yourself and god knows what else?

Mike Judge, the creator of the series, teased that fans would receive a movie “and more.” But for now, Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe is more than enough.

So as we head back to the ’90s, this revival movie will head forward to 2022. We guess we’ll all meet somewhere in the middle. Seems fitting in its way. The Beavis and Butt-Head revival movie will be coming to Paramount+ on June 28th. And we’ll just be sitting here in every universe we inhabit, counting down the days.

THE OFFER Trailer Brings the Real Mob to THE GODFATHER Story https://nerdist.com/article/the-offer-godfather-making-of-series-paramount-plus/ Thu, 14 Apr 2022 15:08:15 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=900114 The latest trailer for Paramount+'s limited series The Offer introduces the real mob as one of the many problems behind making The Godfather.

The post THE OFFER Trailer Brings the Real Mob to THE GODFATHER Story appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

This year marks the golden anniversary for arguably the greatest movie ever made, The Godfather. You can celebrate 50 years of Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic saga in a traditional way if you like. A first-ever, fully restored 4K HD version of the film is now in stores. But if you’re looking for a truly new way to experience the film you can instead celebrate by watching Paramount+‘s series about how the movie almost didn’t get made at all. Because the new trailer for The Offer shows that the film had more than production problems. It had its own mobsters to deal with.

The Offer is based on what Paramount+ calls “producer Albert S. Ruddy’s extraordinary, never-revealed experiences” making the film. This trailer teases the many reasons it almost remained in permanent Hollywood purgatory. A desperate studio looking for a hit was willing to do what no one else in Tinsel Town would. But the difficulties in bringing Mario Puzo’s novel to the screen went well beyond debates over casting Al Pacino or Marlon Brando. It also meant hearing from actual mafioso who did not want to see a movie about their affairs. Not just because it might make the government focus on the mob, though. But because it might also make them look bad.

Hey, no one wants to look bad onscreen, right? Not even actual criminals.

Dan Fogler as Francis Ford Coppola hold a banana as a gun in The Offer
Paramount+

The series stars Miles Teller as Ruddy. Matthew Goode plays the legendary Robert Evans. Juno Temple joins them as Bettye McCartt. With Giovanni Ribisi as Joe Colombo, Burn Gorman as Charles Bluhdorn, and Colin Hanks as Barry Lapidus. And Dan Fogler, in a role he looks like he was born to play, stars as Francis Ford Coppola.

The limited series debuts at Paramount+ April 28, the same day the original Godfather movies arrive on the platform as well. And who knows, maybe in 50 years there will be a movie about this show. Especially if it makes the mob look bad.

Something evil this way comes. Fans of the dark Paramount+ series, Evil, can rejoice. The wait for more of the show is over. In its newest teaser trailer, Evil sets the scene for its third season and sets its release date. If the new teaser, barely thirty seconds long, is anything to go by, this season will have more chills, twists, and stomach-churning scares than ever.

Take a look at Evil season three’s teaser trailer.

That’s right. Toilets overflowing with blood, check. Scratches on the wall, check. And… a forked tongue licking its way along skin… Check. Yep, it looks like everything is in its right place. Paramount+ doesn’t give any further details about Evil’s upcoming season in its description. But according to Deadline, “Season three of Evil begins moments after the end of season two.” For those who haven’t watched season two yet, look away now.

Evil season three or 3 teaser trailer sets release date, a woman with a forked tongue
Paramount+

The horrors in Evil’s teaser do send chills up our spine. But we know some of the drama will feel closer to home. In Evil’s season two finale, fans saw David, newly ordained as a priest, so Father David, if you will, and Kristin kiss. Well, that’s a pickle.

Co-showrunner Michelle King shared with TVLine more about the fallout. She noted that exploring the “sinful” intimacy is “something we want to explore in Season 3, very much. If a priest… possibly has sinned, how does that impact his ability to do his work?” A fascinating question. Although, one could argue that the characters on Evil have bigger problems.

For those not yet caught up, here’s Evil’s overall synopsis:

Evil is a psychological mystery that examines the origins of evil along the dividing line between science and religion. The series focuses on a skeptical female psychologist who joins a priest-in-training and a contractor as they investigate the Church’s backlog of unexplained mysteries, including supposed miracles, demonic possessions, and hauntings. Their job is to assess if there is a logical explanation or if something truly supernatural is at work.

The show stars Katja Herbers, Mike Colter and Aasif Mandvi. If you haven’t been watching along, catch up now on Paramount+. Evil season three premieres on June 12.

Hard to believe that Halo has existed for 21 years. That is a long time for a franchise. But we guess since it continues to evolve, that’s not a surprise. And the Halo series is just another step in that journey. We love the idea of interweaving personal stories with the natural action that stems from Halo‘s games. The show sounds like a fresh take. But also like it respects its roots, even as it innovates them for a new medium. (For example, yes, we will see the Master Chief’s face in the Halo series. But it would be hard to go many episodes without it.)

The Halo series stars Pablo Schreiber (the Master Chief, Spartan John-117), Natascha McElhone (Dr. Halsey), and Jen Taylor (Cortana) among many other talented names. And now, we can finally find out for ourselves how the adaptation brings the games to life. Time to find a quiet spot and press play on Halo‘s first episode. And who knows? Maybe we’ll get hooked and need the second one, stat.

Space might be the final frontier for brave adventurers exploring new worlds. But 4K Ultra HD is the final frontier for home releases. Now the film that brought one of television’s most important franchises to the big screen is boldly going where it has never gone before. The director’s cut of Star Trek: The Motion Picture has received a full restoration and it’s set to stream on First Contact Day.

Paramount and Paramount+ previously announced a full restoration of the Director’s Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The project had an expected timeline of six to eight months. And Paramount tapped Producer David C. Fein, restoration supervisor Mike Matessino, and visual effects supervisor Daren R. Dochterman for the job. All three worked with the movie’s director, Robert Wise, previously.

Now that the project is completed, fans will get a chance to see—and hear—the 1979 film like never before. That includes 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision high dynamic range. Along with a new Dolby Atmos soundtrack. The completed restoration will launch on Paramount+ for an exclusive release window. And all this is coming soon. Star Trek: The Motion Picture—The Director’s Edition “will make its long-awaited debut exclusively on Paramount+ on April 5, 2022, in celebration of First Contact Day.”

Star Trek The Motion Picture poster featuring three faces in red, yellow, and green light, and the Enterprise below themParamount

Additionally, this version of the movie will arrive in theaters as well. The release shares, “Fans will have the opportunity to see the restored version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture—The Director’s Edition on the big screen for the first time when Fathom Events and Paramount Pictures bring it to theaters for an exclusive two-day event on May 22 and May 25. Tickets will go on sale Friday, April 8 at FathomEvents.com.” This should be a special treat for those who love the franchise the most.

For those eager for more, the theatrical cut of the movie has already released in 4K Ultra HD. It arrived in a new box set containing the first four featured films in the franchise. The most enterprising of Star Trek fans will almost certainly want that version too, just for the bonus alone.

Proving once again that while space is the final frontier, in a world with high-def new home releases, the most frequent trip Star Trek fans make is to their wallet.

Since its release in 2001, Halo has captured the attention of gamers with its story of an interstellar war. The franchise has expanded since the early days to include multiple titles, the latest of which released in December 2021. But now it’s time for Halo to come to the screen in a different way as a television series. Paramount+ is adapting the world of the game for television, and since they just premiered the first episode at South by Southwest (SXSW) on Monday, they’ve released a new look. The latest Halo TV series trailer shows more of this ambitious adaptation with action, emotion, and a lot of danger.

The Halo synopsis states:

Dramatizing an epic 26th-century conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as the Covenant, Halo the series will weave deeply drawn personal stories with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision of the future. Nobody can save humanity alone—not even the Master Chief.

No one should have to save humanity alone. Who needs that kind of pressure? But if anyone could come close to the task, it’s Master Chief (Pablo Schreiber). The Spartan soldier, also known as John-117, is Earth’s most advanced warrior. He’s prepared for combat for his entire life, and by the looks of it, the Halo TV series will give him plenty to fight.

Master Chief fires a weapon in the Halo TV series
Paramount+

The story will undoubtedly feature departures from the video game. Most notably, the Halo TV series will show Master Chief’s face for the first time in the franchise’s history. As someone who doesn’t have an attachment to the Halo games, that seems key for showing the character’s humanity in this intense war. However, The Mandalorian has proved it’s possible for a fully obscured character to carry plenty of emotional heft.

Natascha McElhone joins Schreiber in the series as Dr. Halsey. Jen Taylor portrays Cortana, the most advanced AI in human history, and potentially the key to the survival of the human race.

Halo premieres on Paramount+ on March 24.

The series also revealed it'll show Master Chief's face.

Master Chief is coming back for another battle. But he’s not here to dominate video game sales. This time he’ll try to save mankind in an entirely new medium. With Paramount+’s upcoming live-action Halo series. And the Halo show’s first full trailer reminds us why humanity needs Spartan-117. He’s our best hope no matter what kind of screen he appears on. More importantly for fans though, it looks like this war will be one that feels authentic to the franchise. Although, it will have one specific twist on the games. The Halo series will reveal Master Chief’s face.

Paramount+ shared its most in-depth look at its upcoming Halo show as part of this year’s Game Awards. The event was a fitting choice for this Halo trailer. The show looks like a faithful adaption of the games. This is Halo as the fans know and love it.

Pablo Schreiber (American Gods, The Wire) will bring Master Chief to life. Schreiber plays the iconic soldier, “Earth’s most advanced warrior” and its “only hope” for salvation. We hope Master Chief and mankind pull this one out. (Go us!). But mostly we’re just rooting for an entertaining show. And the series’ official synopsis points to a story that will deliver that. From Paramount+:

“Dramatizing an epic 26th-century conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as the Covenant, HALO the series will weave deeply drawn personal stories with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision of the future.”

Joining Schreiber on the show is Natascha McElhone (Californication). She plays Dr. Halsey, “the brilliant, conflicted and inscrutable creator” of the Spartan super soldiers. Jen Taylor of the Halo games is also returning to once again play Cortana. She’s mankind’s “most advanced AI” ever and “potentially the key to the survival” of humanity. Bokeem Woodbine (Fargo), Shabana Azmi (Fire), Natasha Culzac (The Witcher), Olive Gray (Half Moon Investigations), Yerin Ha (Reef Break), Bentley Kalu (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Kate Kennedy (Catastrophe), Charlie Murphy (Peaky Blinders), and Danny Sapani (Penny Dreadful) round out the cast.

However, in recent news from IGN, we learned the Halo series and games will diverge on one important point, showing Master Chief’s face.

A look at Master Chief from Paramount+'s upcoming live-action HALO series trailer. The HALO series/show will reveal Master Chief's face.
Paramount+

Halo 4 gave fans a very fleeting glimpse of Master Chief’s eyes. But aside from this, the games have never truly revealed what the character looks like without his armor. However, the Halo TV series intends to reveal Master Chief’s face for all to see.

Halo’s executive producer Kiki Wolfkill shared:

I think we set out to tell a character story and a personal story. And once we really got into what that story was, it became clear that you really needed to see the person in the armour and under the helmet.

Wolfkill further explained:

You will see his face. For some people, it’s been a moment 20 years in the making, and for other people it is something that feels very hard to imagine. We absolutely respect both sides of that fence, those who really want to see Chief’s face and those who really don’t. But for the nature of this story, it felt really important to connect with the Master Chief in a different way, and that meant showing the face.

Gasp? It certainly feels like a monumental decision. But TV shows do tend to spend more quality time with their main characters than games often do. And, of course, the Halo series and games don’t inhabit exactly the same universe. So, in some ways, this decision doesn’t affect the games at all. Still, it comes as an interesting choice. But, as Wolfkill makes clear, the team has done their homework and made the best possible decision for the show.

In the meanwhile, we get to see some new faces from the Halo series. Three characters from the upcoming show received new posters. They include posters for Riz-028 played by Natasha Culzac, Vannak 134 played by Bentley Kalu, and Kai-125, played by Kate Kennedy.

So far all we know about these characters is that they are Spartans. Together they make up the Silver Team.

The Halo TV series comes to Paramount+ in 2022. Whether it gets a second season will at least partly depend on whether or not Master Chief saves mankind again. If this show is truly authentic to the game, face or no face, he’ll be back for more.

2022 is shaping up to be a pretty big year for blockbuster video game adaptations, with the Uncharted hitting the big screen and The Last of Us and Halo TV series launching on streaming platforms. The latter of which has been in the works in some form or another for nearly a decade. The series is finally within arm’s reach. The Halo TV show will debut on Paramount+ on March 24. In addition, we got a pretty sweet look at Halo during the AFC Championship game.

Stunning imagery, an imminent alien war, and an ethereal Phil Collins cover? This trailer certainly means business.

Like the games it’s based on, the series follows the 26th-century war between humans and a group of aliens called the Covenant. It stars Pablo Schreiber as the Master Chief, Spartan-117; Natascha McElhone as Dr. Halsey, creator of the Spartan super-soldiers; and Jen Taylor as Cortana, reprising her role from the games. Cortana is a supremely advanced AI, that may prove vital to humans’ survival.

But as the trailer suggests, war with the Covenant isn’t the only budding war. Dr. Halsey has the power to control the Spartan soldiers, but what happens when she can’t? After touching the mysterious object the aliens are mining from Earth, something shifts in the soldier. And she can no longer control him. Which may just make him a risk to her program’s future.

In addition to the main trio, the Halo TV Show boasts a large ensemble cast. It includes Bokeem Woodbine, Shabana Azmi, Natasha Culzac, Olive Gray, Yerin Ha, Bentley Kalu, Kate Kennedy, Charlie Murphy, Danny Sapani. Presumably, they’ll all play characters first introduced in the games. Ryan McParland, Burn Gorman, and Fiona O’Shaughnessy will play original characters.

While the trailer debuted during primetime football coverage, Paramount+ also released a bunch of images that give us a better sense of the futuristic world and its perils.

While we haven’t seen too much footage of the show previously, Paramount+ dropped two short teasers in late 2021. Both gave us a glimpse of Earth’s future, featuring sweeping shots of the looming space-based threat, Master Chief suiting up, and our expansive cast of characters. Suffice to say, they looked pretty promising.

The first season of the Halo TV show drops on March 24.

The upcoming Rugrats series looks totally different from the original one. It is in 3D this time around which is a bit jarring but alright. But we can take comfort in the fact that the original voice cast is back for more action. And, to get everyone hype for their triumphant return, the crew got together for a Rugrats reunion. The video is all sorts of entertaining with funny anecdotes, a table read, and fun trivia as they slip in and out of their character voices.

Kath Soucie (Phil and Lil), E.G. Daily (Tommy), Cheryl Chase (Angelica), Nancy Cartwright (Chuckie), and the incomparable Cree Summer (Susie) came together for some wonderfully childish fun. There’s no talent in the world quite like creating a completely different voice/character on demand. And, we get to learn a bit more about their bond with each other and the series. For example, Cree Summer reveals that her favorite original series moment is a Kwanzaa episode. Summer said the special shows Suzie’s healthy, loving Black family, which is an important level of representation.

The cast also reveals that the new series will reveal more about Reptar and dive into Chuckie’s dad’s ear. Daily says she loves voicing Tommy because of his broken voice and fans ask her to quote lines all the time. Of course, “a baby’s gotta do what a baby’s gotta do!” is the most popular one of all. Cartwright says Chuckie is extremely funny and afraid of literally everything, thereby proving that some things will never change. In fact, they are all still the same characters we know and love. And now a new generation will fall in love with them too.

The team gets put to the test about their knowledge about the characters, including what they wear, their age, and their looks. The video wraps up with a table read of a classic moment where Tommy loses his ball and gets super upset. Honestly, this video will make you want to check out the series, which is now streaming on Paramount +.

What CLARICE Gets Right About Clarice Starling https://nerdist.com/article/clarice-starling-silence-of-the-lambs-cbs-all-access/ Thu, 11 Feb 2021 18:00:20 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=785950 The new CBS All Access series Clarice explores the character made famous in The Silence of the Lambs, and reclaims her story in the process.

The post What CLARICE Gets Right About Clarice Starling appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Clarice Starling sits opposite a therapist, their session recounting a series of events familiar to fans of The Silence of the Lambs. It’s been a year since since the FBI trainee—now a graduate of the academy—discovered and killed serial killer Buffalo Bill. But he lingers still, impressed on her subconscious like a fossil of the death’s-head moths he placed in his victim’s throats. A symbol of metamorphosis for him, preserved in fever-dream flashes for her.

“I thought it was done,” Clarice says in her West Virginia twang. Subtle notes of Q Lazzarus’ “Goodbye Horses” play over memories of Bill hunched over his sewing machine, stitching human flesh. The song was a standout moment in the 1991 film, but here it’s a shadow. Because this isn’t Buffalo Bill’s story. Or Hannibal Lecter’s. It’s Clarice’s, and it fits a little uncomfortably.

Clarice Starling is flanked by moths in a poster for CBS's Clarice.CBS All Access

Clarice, the new CBS All Access (soon to be Paramount+) series plants us firmly in Clarice’s world. And it isn’t exactly a cakewalk. Following her impressive detective work on the the Buffalo Bill case, she became something of a celebrity. A fixture of the tabloids. The poster child of the FBI. But it’s the 1990s. That a woman—not even an agent at the time of Bill’s killing—solved a case her male elders could not has ruffled some feathers. Couple that with the PTSD caused by her showdown in Bill’s basement, and her manipulation by the imprisoned cannibalistic psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter, and we’re left with a Clarice frozen in amber.

She spends her days in the basement of the Behavioral Science Lab at FBI headquarters, feeding paper to machines. She isn’t in the field tracking down killers as one might expect. She’s in limbo, and in no hurry to seek resolve. So she keeps her therapist at a distance, cracking jokes to ward off inquisition. It’s a little frustrating to see a character so resolute in The Silence of the Lambs plopped into a fairly by-the-numbers CBS procedural. But it also feels appropriate. And totally in keeping with the character made famous by Jodie Foster back in 1991, and whom Thomas Harris first brought to life in his 1988 novel.

Clarice Starling and the reflection of Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs.Orion Pictures

The history of Clarice Starling

Clarice has been in the shadows for too long. Not that she isn’t beloved or respected. But she’s rarely the focal point of new Harris adaptations. It’s true that Hannibal Lecter—the flesh-hungry villain played by the likes of Brian Cox, Anthony Hopkins, and Mads Mikkelsen—came first. Harris introduced Hannibal in his 1981 novel Red Dragon, set after the events of his capture by FBI profiler Will Graham. In that book, Lecter helps Graham capture another killer known as “The Tooth Fairy.” Red Dragon has been adapted three times: as Michael Mann’s Manhunter in 1986, as Brett Ratner’s Red Dragon in 2002, and in the third season of Bryan Fuller’s NBC series Hannibal. It’s an excellent book and Lecter is the most delicious of villains—unknowable, cunning, manipulative. But his story often overshadows Harris’ secret ingredient, Clarice Starling.

Manhunter received mixed reviews and poor box office receipts upon release. But The Silence of the Lambs, released five years later, was a smash hit in every possible way. The film made $272 million at the box office off a $19 million budget. It’s also the third film in history to win the top five categories at the Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay) and is the first—and only—horror movie to earn the top honor. There are a lot of reasons for this. Jonathan Demme’s haunting direction, Hopkin’s disorienting depiction of Lecter, and a whip-smart screenplay that perfectly captures the thrills of the source material.

But it’s Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling that elevates everything. She’s steely and professional, but emotional, too. She’s the Clarice of Harris’ book, but also her own concoction; her small physicality not a detriment so much as a weapon. We see her flanked by male peers who loom over her in the elevator. Her womanhood is an asset in so many ways, but not in the way men like Section Chief Jack Crawford expect. He assigns her to interview Lecter, hoping her femininity disarms him. But really, Clarice’s super power is her vulnerability. She looks at the body of a dead woman and notices her nail polish; and therefore, the person she was. Insights like these lead her to Buffalo Bill. Her empathy also shields her from Lecter’s venom; even her prized cow colleague Will Graham couldn’t manage that.

Harris famously lost the plot when it comes to Clarice Starling. In his 1999 sequel novel Hannibal, she’s enmeshed in a narrative involving a pedophilic serial killer named Mason Verger, himself a victim of Lecter. Now a seasoned FBI agent, she wrestles with her place in the system and her complicated remorse for Lecter. When the cannibal psychiatrist, who’s living freely in Florence, saves her from Verger, things get really weird. Lecter feeds Clarice drugs and psychologically abuses her. But when she comes to, instead of feeling mortified, she falls in love with him. Yes, Clarice Starling and Hannibal Lecter become lovers on the run in Italy. It’s as grimy and upsetting as it sounds.

Clarice Starling stands behind crime scene tape in a still from CBS's Clarice.CBS All Access

What Clarice gets right

For longtime fans of Starling, Hannibal the novel is a hard pill to swallow. It soured many of us from the source material. That is, until Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal reclaimed the name in a dazzling way. That NBC show is phenomenal and unique, blending elements of Harris’s novels into a baroque remix that centers mostly on the relationship between Lecter and Graham. For complicated rights reasons, most Silence of the Lambs characters were kept out of the series—including Clarice Starling. For those same rights reasons, the name Hannibal Lecter is forbidden in CBS’s Clarice.

But this isn’t as bad as it seems. Yes, Lecter is a central figure in Clarice Starling’s story. But that’s not always a good thing, as evidenced by Hannibal. She is just as interesting and vital without him—if a little less flashy. The lack of flashiness might detract some viewers. The show lives in the shadow of Fuller’s creation, and that’s quite understandable. But Hannibal the show existed in the headspace of male fantasy, where violence is an expression. In Clarice, violence is dull and grey. Because that’s how it is for women; unrelenting and everywhere.

Australian actress Rachel Breeds plays Starling in Clarice. She’s no Jodie Foster—because no one else is—but she finds the character’s humanity in other ways. She’s a more playful Clarice, and a more developed one, by virtue of the television format. She lives off ramen noodles and soda and Twizzlers, but works out like a maniac. We see more of her personal life, including her relationships with women. She cohabitates with friend and colleague Ardelia Mapp (Devyn A. Tyler). Wrestles with the trauma she shares with surviving Bill victim Catherine Martin (Marnee Carpenter). Tries to appease Catherine’s mother, US Senator Ruth Martin (Jayne Atkinson). All the while figuring out her place in a department that regards her skills with suspicion.

The first three episodes of Clarice are a mixed bag. It’s a CBS procedural, after all, so it must be considered on those terms. Hannibal got away with things most network series cannot, including a surprising leniency when it comes to gore. Clarice is more standard and formulaic, and has some clunky lines of dialogue and plot conventions. But it’s also highly watchable and, at its core, quite interesting. Perhaps that’s due to Jenny Lumet’s involvement. The executive producer wrote the script for Rachel Getting Married, one of Silence of the Lambs director Jonathan Demme’s last films. There’s some shared DNA in the soul of these projects; the desire to trap us in Clarice Starling’s worldview, as uncomfortable and occasionally mundane as it is.

It’s too early to say how successful Clarice will be in this endeavor, but for the first time in a long time, it feels like a project is committed to what makes her special. Not the violent men who suck up the attention. Who kill and maim and torture. But in the way women pick up the pieces they leave behind. Clean up the mess. And occasionally break down and cry when it gets to be too much. That vulnerable quality has always been Clarice Starling’s great strength, and it’s exciting to see it explored instead of silenced.

When I was growing up you were either Team Sega Genesis or Team Super Nintendo. I was a Sega kid. Now did that mean SNES fans were my mortal enemy? Yes, of course. They still are and always will be. That’s just how it worked. You had to pick a side in the first truly great video game fight. And the epic story of that Sonic versus Mario showdown will be told in the new documentary Console Wars, coming to CBS All Access this month.

“Console Wars takes viewers back to 1990 when Sega, a fledgling arcade company, assembled a team of misfits to take on the greatest video game company in the world, Nintendo. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, no-holds-barred conflict that pit brother against brother, kids against grownups, Sonic against Mario, and uniquely American capitalism against centuries-old Japanese tradition. For the first time ever, the men and women who fought on the front lines for Sega and Nintendo discuss this battle that defined a generation.”

Legendary Television and CBS Television Studios have teamed up for an unprecedented look at the battle Sega and Nintendo waged in the ’90s. Console Wars, an official selection of the 2020 SXSW Film Festival, will bring together the combatants from both sides of the marketplace conflict to discuss what drove them in the fight for console supremacy.

Jonah Tulis and Blake J. Harris, author of the bestselling book of the same name, directed and produced the documentary. Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen also served as executive producers. The documentary will debut on CBS All Access in the United States on Wednesday, September 23. It’s the first feature-length documentary for both the streaming service and Legendary Television.

Will Console Wars finally heal the divide between Sega and Nintendo kids? No. That will never happen. (Unless my SNES friends want to play Streets of Rage 2. Then they’re always welcome to come over.) But it sure is going to be fun seeing that the people in charge at both companies cared as much as we did.

When the Twilight Zone reboot from modern master of horror Jordan Peele premiered, it shocked everyone last year by being a worthy and true successor to Rod Serling’s all-time classic television series. Now, The Twilight Zone is returning for a second season on CBS All Access in June, once again with an all-star lineup. And once again with Peele as our host. The arrival of this trailer just so happens to coincide with national Twilight Zone Day.

You can check out the trailer for the 10-episode season down below:

So what can we expect from the second season? According to CBS All Access, “The series’ second season uses introspection and self-exploration to usher viewers into a dimension filled with endless possibilities.” Well, that sounds appropriately vague, and very classic Twilight Zone-y. Just like the original series, the new version of the series showcases socially conscious stories. These are very in keeping with Jordan Peele’s films like Get Out and Us. Also on board along with Peele as series producer is the X-Men films’ Simon Kinberg.

So what can we glean about the new season from the trailer? As it so often is with The Twilight Zone, there’s a lot of creepy imagery and spooky music. But it’s hard to make a trailer that gives away much in terms of narrative when it’s an anthology series. Still, it’s all very intriguing imagery, so you can count us in when season two of The Twilight Zone drops on CBS All Access on June 25th.

David Bowie’s THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH Is Becoming a TV Show https://nerdist.com/article/the-man-who-fell-to-earth-tv-show-david-bowie/ Fri, 02 Aug 2019 17:57:35 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=666421 David Bowie's cult sci-fi classic The Man Who Fell to Earth is being reimagined as a streaming series for CBS All Access.

The Man Who Fell to Earth was one of the great cult science fiction films of the ’70s. Originally based on a novel by Walter Tevis, the 1976 film by Nicolas Roeg achieved much of its cult status thanks to the fact that its the titular alien was played by none other than otherwordly icon David Bowie. According to a report from Deadline, the classic story is being reimagined as a television series, with none other than current Star Trek guru Alex Kurtzman at the helm. The show has a full series order from CBS All Access, which is also the home of Kurtzman’s Star Trek: Discovery and the forthcoming Star Trek: Picard.

David Bowie’s THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH Is Becoming a TV Show_1

Originally set up at Hulu, the recent Disney buyout of Fox maneuvered CBS to steer the production to their own streaming platform instead. The series seems like it will only be loosely based on the original film and novel, and the titular man who fell to Earth won’t be the same character that Bowie played over 40 years ago. Instead, this new alien character will be based on.. Steve Jobs? Yes, according to comments made by Kurtzman, the alien who comes to our planet is going to be a tech giant.

In a statement, Kurtzman and series producer Jenny Lumet said the following:

“Walter Tevis’ visionary novel gave us a Tech God Willy Wonka from another planet, brought to life by David Bowie’s legendary performance, that foretold Steve Jobs’ and Elon Musk’s impact on our world. The series will imagine the next step in our evolution, seen through the eyes of an alien who must learn what it means to become human, even as he fights for the survival of his species.”

There is no word yet on who CBS has in mind to fill Bowie’s impressive moon boots, but it’s quite a tall order to try and recapture the magic that he brought to the role. Granted, that the lead alien will be a separate character from Bowie’s Jerome Newton is one hurdle overcome. Kurtzman is starting a writer’s room for the series in the fall, with production expected to begin sometime next year.

7 Non-NEXT GENERATION Characters Who Could Join STAR TREK: PICARD https://nerdist.com/article/star-trek-picard-7-non-next-generation-characters/ Fri, 26 Jul 2019 16:07:17 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=665886 Since Seven of Nine is joining the cast of Star Trek: Picard, might we see other Voyager and Deep Space Nine alumni join the cast?

The post 7 Non-NEXT GENERATION Characters Who Could Join STAR TREK: PICARD appeared first on Nerdist.

One of the big surprises of the Star Trek: Picard trailer shown at San Diego Comic-Con was the reveal that Jeri Ryan would be returning to the Trek world as Seven of Nine. Unlike Brent Spiner and other former Next Generation characters set to return for Picard, Ryan’s character never once appeared on TNG. Instead, she was on Star Trek: Voyager, a spin-off that had little connection to any characters on the Enterprise.

This confirms that Star Trek: Picard isn’t just a sequel to TNG, but to the 24th Century era of Star Trek in general, which included not only Voyager, but also Deep Space Nine. This has us wondering which other characters from those shows could appear. In honor of Seven of Nine, here are seven of our choices for familiar faces from other Trek series we’d love to see in some form on Star Trek: Picard.

Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew)

7 Non-NEXT GENERATION Characters Who Could Join STAR TREK: PICARD_1

The last time we saw the former Captain of Voyager, it was in the form a cameo on Captain Picard’s viewscreen as the newly promoted Admiral Janeway. This took place only a year after she got her lost ship back home to Earth. She traded friendly repartee with Picard as she gave him his assignment, suggesting the two at least knew one another. The fact that she got promoted to Admiral after getting Voyager home means she could have risen up in the ranks at Starfleet rather quickly since then. It’s not inconceivable to believe that by the time we get to the events of Picard, she is even the head of Starfleet.

Chancellor Martok (J. G. Hertzler)

7 Non-NEXT GENERATION Characters Who Could Join STAR TREK: PICARD_2

Introduced on Deep Space Nine, General Martok was one of the key Klingon characters on the series aside from Worf. Shown as being gruff and easily irritated, the honorable-to-a-fault warrior rose through the ranks of the Klingon military during the events of the Dominion War. By the end of the series, he had ascended to the role of Chancellor of the Klingon Empire. If we get to the Klingons at some point during Picard, and we almost certainly will, then it stands to reason we should see Martok as their leader.

Tuvok (Tim Russ)

7 Non-NEXT GENERATION Characters Who Could Join STAR TREK: PICARD_3

Voyager’s resident Vulcan officer, he served with Captain Janeway on several different assignments prior to their seven years together on Voyager. Now, it would make sense for most of the other Voyager crew members to have moved onto other assignments outside Starfleet after being stuck in the far end of space for so long. Several weren’t even officially part of Starfleet anyway. But Tuvok was fiercely loyal to Janeway, and I would like to believe that he’d still be by her side. If she shows up, I say he shows up right alongside her. Besides, Tuvok would only be around 140 years of age at circa Picard. That’s only middle age for Vulcans!

Chief Miles O’ Brien (Colm Meaney)

7 Non-NEXT GENERATION Characters Who Could Join STAR TREK: PICARD_4

This one’s a little bit of a cheat, as the character of Miles O’Brien appeared on The Next Generation in a recurring role for six seasons before becoming a main character on Deep Space Nine. When DS9 ended, he was seen leaving the station with his family to start a teaching job at Starfleet Academy back on Earth. If Picard takes its titular character to Academy grounds at any point, it would be great for Jean-Luc to see his trusty transporter chief again.

Nog (Aron Eisenberg)

7 Non-NEXT GENERATION Characters Who Could Join STAR TREK: PICARD_5

When we were first introduced to Nog in the first season of Deep Space Nine, he was still a child. He exhibited all the misogynistic and materialistic traits usually associated with his race, the Ferengi. But as the series moved on, his time interacting with the human Jake Sisko and with other species on DS9 caused his character to grow significantly. And he eventually joined Starfleet Academy and became an officer. One of Captain Sisko’s last acts before joining the Prophets was to promote Nog to the rank of Lt. Twenty years later, we’d like to see him as Captain Nog, first Ferengi commanding officer in Starfleet.

Harry Kim (Garrett Wang)

7 Non-NEXT GENERATION Characters Who Could Join STAR TREK: PICARD_6

Poor Harry Kim. Much of his time of Voyager found him kidnapped and held hostage by the alien species of the week, or having his romantic interests fizzle out. He just couldn’t catch a break. On top of that, in seven seasons of the show (on which he was played by the affable Garrett Wang), his rank remained at ensign level. Janeway never thought to promote him! We think this character, only the second Asian lead in a Star Trek series, deserves redemption. Instead of having some random no-name starship captain when the plot calls for it, why not finally give Kim the big promotion he deserves? It’s been nearly 20 years since Voyager; we must assume Harry rose in the ranks of Starfleet by now.

Dax (played by ???)

7 Non-NEXT GENERATION Characters Who Could Join STAR TREK: PICARD_7

One of the most fascinating alien races in all of Star Trek are the Trill. A joined species, they consist of host body and symbiont. When one humanoid host body dies, the symbiote joins with a new host. This then carries on the previous host’s memories, and part of their personality too. On Deep Space Nine, we had two different Trill who joined with the Dax symbiote: Jadzia Dax (Terry Farell) and Ezri Dax (Nicole de Boer). We think it would be fascinating if 20 years later, the Dax symbiote would reappear, only now attached to yet another host body. Given that the last two were female, it would throw the audience a bit to suddenly see Dax as a man this time.

When Jordan Peele does something, we’re duty-bound to pay attention. The comedian turned horror maestro wowed the pants off of us – and the Academy – with his debut feature, Get Out, one of the biggest movie events of the last decade. And, lucky for us, he shows no signs of stopping. This March, his next feature, Us, will debut, and he’s also producing a Candyman remake for next year.

That’s all good and exciting, but I can’t deny that my most anticipated Peele project on the horizon is The Twilight Zone. The original Rod Serling horror anthology is one of the greatest TV shows of all time, and easily one of the most iconic.

Peele will step into Serling’s shoes for the CBS All Access reboot, and a new trailer just dropped, giving us an even closer look at his take on the classic series.

Fittingly, The Twilight Zone will premiere with two episodes on Monday, April 1, 2019, with all subsequent episodes airing Thursdays beginning April 11, 2019. The new trailer also pulls back the curtain to show snapshots of what we’ll be seeing in Peele’s The Twilight Zone, as opposed to the Super Bowl spot that aired a few weeks ago.

The trailer doesn’t show us any footage from the series, but it does feature a fun meta deconstruction of Super Bowl trailers. “Witness an empty space filled with thousands of screaming people,” says a suited Peele as he walks through an abandoned football stadium. “A man, both nowhere and everywhere at the same time. Answers are new questions, the unthinkable is the expected, and truth is not the truth. What dimension are you even in?”

Sounds like The Twilight Zone, all right! According to a press release, the trailer was filmed in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta last night, ahead of the Big Game. The famous Twilight Zone door was even assembled on the 50-yard line. Pretty cool!

We already know a few things about Peele’s Twilight Zone reboot. It has a stacked cast, for one. Greg Kinnear, Steven Yeun, John Cho, Jacob Tremblay, Ike Barinholtz, Taissa Farmiga, Allison Tolman, and Kumail Nanjiani will all star in episodes. Adam Scott and Sanaa Lathan will also appear in a reimagined version of “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet,” the iconic episode starring William Shatner and a scary plane gremlin.

The Twilight Zone will premiere on CBS All Access on April 1.

Michelle Yeoh STAR TREK Spin-Off Series Officially In Development https://nerdist.com/article/michelle-yeoh-star-trek-spinoff-tv-series/ Mon, 14 Jan 2019 18:45:04 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=628406 The post Michelle Yeoh STAR TREK Spin-Off Series Officially In Development appeared first on Nerdist.

According to Deadline, the Star Trek television universe will continue to expand. In addition to the animated series Lower Decks and the Captain Picard centric series coming to CBS All Access, another Trek spin-off has been confirmed, this time starring Michelle Yeoh as Captain Philippa Georgiou. Or, to be more specific, the sinister version of Captain Philippa Georgiou from the Mirror Universe, introduced in the back half of the Star Trek: Discovery‘s first season.New guru of all things Trek, Alex Kurtzman, will be overseeing the series, with Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt serving as executive producers. Yeoh will be headlining the show, but it appears the spin-off will be an ensemble show in traditional Star Trek fashion. Captain Georgiou was introduced in the pilot of Discovery as the wise and noble captain of the Starship USS Shenzou. She was the mentor to Sonequa Martin-Green’s character, but Georgiou was killed off in that first chapter. Yeoh later returned in the series as Philippa Georgiou’s sinister counterpart from the Mirror Universe, where she ruled as Empress. She then came to the Prime universe, took her counterpart’s place, and became a part of Section 31, Starfleet’s secret black ops division. This series is historical for two reasons: chiefly, it will be the first Trek series with an Asian lead. But secondly, it will be the first series in Star Trek history where the lead character is, for all intents and purposes, evil. Given how truly sadistic the character was portrayed as in Discovery, it will be interesting to see how the showrunners make us sympathize with her.
