Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi are slated to star in Emerald Fennell’s upcoming film Wuthering Heights, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is an adaptation of Emily Brontë’s book of the same name. The film is currently in pre-production and set to start shooting in the United Kingdom next year. Robbie will play Catherine Earnshaw, the main female protagonist of the novel. Elordi will portray Heathcliff, the Earnshaws’ foster son.

MRC and LuckyChap Entertainment are producing the film along with Fennell, who will also be writing. Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara founded the production company LuckyChap Entertainment. Among the films LuckyChap has produced are I, Tonya and Barbie, both of which have won an Academy Award and star Margot Robbie.

Fennell announced her intention to make a Wuthering Heights adaptation in July through a social media graphic. The Wuthering Heights adaptation will be Fennell’s third film with LuckyChap Entertainment. Fennell has previously directed LuckyChap Entertainment-produced films, Promising Young Woman and last year’s Saltburn. Fennell’s social media sensation Saltburn saw Elordi as one of the main actors. Elordi gained recognition for starring as Nate Jacobs in the teen drama Euphoria and as Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla. Elordi will appear in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, which is filming now.

Robbie is an actress and producer most known for her titular roles in last summer’s box office hit Barbie. Barbie was the highest-grossing film of 2023. Additionally, Robbie earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for I, Tonya. Robbie will be appearing in Kogonada’s A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, releasing May 2025.

Filmmakers have adapted Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights into film multiple times in various languages. Famously, the Academy nominated the 1939’s Wuthering Heights for Best Picture. Most recently, in 2011, the book was adapted into a film starring Kaya Scodelario.

It’s been a busy time for Netflix’s live-action anime adaptations. The platform is working on its highly-anticipated live-action version of Avatar: The Last Airbender, it brought to life a live-action One Piece series, and it gave us an, unfortunately canceled, live-action Cowboy Bebop show. We even recently heard that Netflix is teaming with Stranger Things creators, the Duffer Brothers, for a live-action series adapting the anime Death Note. On top of this impressive list, Netflix has also revealed more exciting news about its adaptation of the anime Yu Yu Hakusho. Here’s what we know about Netlfix’s live-action Yu Yu Hakusho adaptation so far.

Netflix’s Live-Action Yu Yu Hakusho Releases Trailer

It’s our best look yet at all the excitement of Netflix’s live-action Yu Yu Hakusho—a trailer. Check out the epic tease below.

Honestly, it looks like a lot of fun and well-worth waiting for. It’s not always easy bringing anime to life, but this series is really selling it and us on what’s in store. It definitely has the distinct feeling of an anime. And that’s a good thing in our book.

The Cast of Netflix’s Live-Action Yu Yu Hakusho and First-Look Photos From the Series

That trailer looked great and the characters really drive it. Here’s a closer look at the cast of Yu Yu Hakusho. Yu Yu Hakusho centers on Yusuke Urameshi, Takumi Kitamura will play this lead role. Netflix has also shared the casting for fan-favorite character Kurama. Jun Shison will play the fox demon. Finally, Kanata Hongo will play the character of Hiei.

Additionally, Netflix has revealed that Shuhei Uesugi will play Kazuma Kuwabara.

More About the Netflix Series

As fans of the series know, Yu Yu Hakusho tells the story of Yusuke Urameshi. Yusuke Urameshi begins the tale as a troubled high school student who dies performing a good deed. He then finds himself with neither a place in heaven nor hell. After being revived and passing a test, he transforms into an “Underworld Detective” who investigates cases involving demons. According to Netflix, Yusuke Urameshi “becomes entwined in a mystery that envelopes the human, demon and spirit worlds.” All elements we can expect to see in the upcoming live-action series adaptation of the anime.

In a release, Yu Yu Hakusho‘s director Sho Tsukikawa further shares, “When I first heard about Yu Yu Hakusho receiving a live-action adaptation, I honestly wondered if it would even be possible—but after being presented with the producer’s vision and possibilities with Netflix, my expectations grew, and I found myself burning with passion to make this project come to life.” That certainly sounds promising for fans of the anime.

Live-Action Yu Yu Hakusho‘s Release Date

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho will premiere on December 14, 2023. We can’t wait to see Yusuke Urameshi take on demons in this anime adaptation.

Director Takashi Miike on Why BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL is His Favorite of His Films https://nerdist.com/article/blade-of-the-immortal-director-takashi-miike-interview/ Mon, 06 Nov 2017 16:00:49 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=554100 The post Director Takashi Miike on Why BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL is His Favorite of His Films appeared first on Nerdist.

Takashi Miike is a powerhouse of cinema. In his 26 years as a director he’s made some of the world’s most controversial and lauded films. Even if you don’t recognize his name you’ve likely seen one of his groundbreaking creations: Ichi the Killer, Audition, Gozu, Visitor Q, or maybe his acclaimed foray into historical action, 13 Assassins. To celebrate the release of his 100th movie, the outstanding adaptation of Hiroaki Samura’s beloved manga Blade of the Immortal, we sat down with the visionary Japanese auteur as he looked back over his career and opened up about his creative process.

With such an extensive body of work you’d think it would be hard for Miike to choose a favorite. But for the director there is a simple answer: his most recent creation, Blade of the Immortal. “The 100th film is a capitulation of the 99 that came before it,” Miike said. “In those 99 films there were lessons that I learned, there were discoveries that were made. So my newest film, it’s almost like my youngest child. And your youngest child is always your cutest baby.”

As his eclectic back catalog suggests, Miike has no interest in playing by the rulebook—not even his own, preferring to allow each film to materialize organically. “A lot of the films I’ve made are maybe similar,” he said. “But when I make a film I don’t want to put in my own personal tastes or put everything of mine in there. I don’t want to make something where it’s me directing everything or where I’m calling the shots. I don’t want to make a film because it’s what I want to make or what the world wants to see from me. That’s not the way that I work.”

Miike continued, “For me, I feel like it gets in the way, so I try to avoid that as much as possible. I try to naturally let myself go with the process, and, of course, I try to make a good film. But it’s not that I try to put my ideas in it or make it what I think it wants to become. I let it become what it wants to become.”

When Miike began his career in film, he never imagined he would reach the point where he would direct 100 films. In fact, at the beginning of his journey he had no ambitions to helm any films at all. “Honestly, I never had the goal of becoming a director,” Miike said. “Originally, I was an assistant director. For many people in that role, becoming a director is the ultimate goal. But, in my case, that wasn’t my goal at all. I just had fun doing it. The schedule was hard, but I enjoyed it greatly so I just kept at it.”

Miike takes great pride in creating working environments that people enjoy, often being inspired to create art for the purpose of giving actors a new or different platform. His favorite part of directing comes from bringing together a team to create something incredible. “My thoughts on the filmmaking process is that maybe the real product for all of us is to gather everyone together, all of these talented people, to create this atmosphere and this vibe of, ‘Wow, I just love being an actor,'” he said. “I feel like for some people this might be difficult to understand. Maybe an orchestra would understand as it has many moving parts. But to bring all these people with different life goals and ambitions together, you create this huge thing. To me, the real product is to create an atmosphere where you can say, ‘I love to be here.'”

Miike was a fan of the long running Blade of the Immortal manga on which his film is based. But as it had run for almost 20 years, it was a fluctuating fandom. The choice to make this film was once again a selfless one, driven by his passion for creating exciting and unexpected roles for actors. “Recently in Japan, a lot of movies are made for middle school kids, for young boys and girls to say, ‘Oh, they’re so good looking!'” Miike said. “A lot of the actors in those films, they think to themselves, ‘This isn’t why I became an actor, to be in these bubblegum pop films.’ So from talking to them I realized they want to do some unique roles, different roles with strong protagonists, with compelling characters. Talking to some of those actors that I worked with, they brought up Blade of the Immortal a lot. So it’s not that I’ve read every book in the series, but more that I wanted to put this together to create these compelling roles for the actors.”

Blade of the Immortal is an unmissable experience, a fantastic adaptation and another brilliant addition to Miike’s canon. Will you be checking out the film now that it finally has an American release? Do you have a favorite moment you can’t wait to see on the screen? Let us know in the comments!
