In the ‘90s, Scream led to a swath of teen ensemble horror franchises like Final Destination and I Know What You Did Last Summer. It’s now officially back into the game with last year’s hit movie and another film coming soon. So, it is not surprising that the franchise is inspiring others to dust off their dormant universes and return back for more gore. Deadline reports that an I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel will release on July 18, 2025.

And, we now know that Freddie Prinze, Jr. is officially returning for the I Still Know What You Did Last Summer sequel and reprising his role as Ray Bronson. The jury is still out for Jennifer Love Hewitt but she is expected to return… and Brandy also wants in on this movie.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Brandy basically says “I wanna be down” with the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel (more of a reboot, maybe?) action. We do love us come Karla Wilson, who survived the events of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

“I need them to give me a call because I survived in that movie!” Brandy affirmed. “I came out in the end, bloodied up, ready to go. I did not die in that film… Jennifer, Freddie, hit me up.”

We don’t know if Brandy will be a part of it or not. But we do know that Camila Mendes of Riverdale fame won’t be in the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot. According to Deadline, she’s going to be very busy with her new role as Teela in Masters of the Universe and the production dates between the two projects do not work.

We will have to wait and see what this next terrible summer includes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Hauer-King are all in talks to star in the movie. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is set to direct this sequel.

If the original stars do come back, the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel will likely follow a format similar to what we saw in Scream (2022). Legacy characters like Julie James (I guess) and Ray Bronson will return to help newer people get through a horrific antagonist is a win for longtime fans and new ones, too. It would be interesting, though, considering that the last time we saw these I Know What You Did Last Summer characters, it seemed that the hooked killer was about to murder them. Of course, this could have simply been Julie’s bad dream.

Thankfully, a canceled fourth film with their confirmed deaths didn’t take place. If both Julie James and Ray Bronson come back for an I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel, it will be interesting to see if they are still together and what their lives are like decades later.

James Wan continues to keep his strong foothold in the horror world. His Atomic Monster company is producing Teacup, an upcoming Peacock series based on Robert McCammon’s bestselling novel Stinger (1988). I love nothing more than a teaser that gives little to no information but still piques the viewer’s curiosity. That’s what we get with Teacup’s dark trailers.

The synopsis for Teacup doesn’t give us much to support the trailer, either.

Teacup follows a disparate group of people in rural Georgia who must come together in the face of a mysterious threat in order to survive. Inspired by the New York Times bestselling novel Stinger by Robert McCammon.

I continue to maintain that small towns are the scariest places on Earth. So, let’s talk a little more about what goes down in the book. Of course, there will likely be liberties taken in the Teacup series but at least this will give you a better idea of what’s happening here. This is the synopsis for Stinger

The story takes place during a single twenty-four hour period in Inferno, Texas. Inferno is a town in trouble, driven to the brink by racial tension, gang violence, and a collapsing economy. But things can always get worse, and they do so with astonishing speed when an unidentified spacecraft crash lands in the desert outside of town, followed by a second craft bearing the alien being who will soon be known as Stinger. Stinger is a kind of interstellar hunter on a mission he intends to complete, whatever the cost. He brings with him an endless array of technological marvels and an infinite capacity for destruction that threaten the existence of Inferno, its inhabitants, and the larger world beyond.

The first two episodes of Teacup will hit Peacock on October 10, followed by two episodes weekly through Halloween to complete the eight episode season. Until then, we will be patiently waiting for a full Teacup trailer to arrive soon.

Horror continues to take some inventive swings in this post-Get Out era. From Smile to Barbarian, there are some premises that truly stand out from the crowd. And it looks like we will be able to add Netflix’s Don’t Move, a film produced by the legendary Sam Raimi, to the list. It gives us quite the tough question to answer. What would you do if you only had 20 minutes to escape a serial killer while your body is slowly shutting down from paralysis? Well, I honestly don’t know besides run as fast and far as I can and try to find a place to hide until the awful meds wear off… if they do wear off. The first trailer for Don’t Move is fantastic, giving us intense action without giving away too much of the movie. That’s certainly key with a seemingly on-the-nose premise like this one.

In the clip, we see a woman who is watching a timer on her phone and trying to escape peril. There are several shots of her running, hiding, and even trying to speak to people before her body totally shuts down altogether. We don’t know her name nor why this man is trying so hard to kill her. Well, besides the fact that he’s just psychotic. He even explains exactly what will happen to her at certain points, which means he’s a pro at this awful game of cat and mouse.

Here’s a synopsis for Don’t Move to accompany that intense trailer:

A grieving woman hoping to find solace deep in an isolated forest encounters a stranger who injects her with a paralytic agent. As the agent gradually takes over her body, she must run, hide, and fight for her life before her entire nervous system shuts down.

Hello, fellow storm clouds. Wednesday season two is getting closer each day with Jenna Ortega and her comrades currently filming the popular series. Things are truly back in swing at Nevermore Academy as Wednesday continues to investigate the school’s many mysteries while dealing with typical teen issues. To celebrate Netflix’s Geeked Week, the streaming service gave us the gift of a Wednesday season two behind the scenes clip.

In it, we get to see our favorite sharp-tongued Addams family member, her bestie Enid, her kooky parentals, Bianca, and more characters. The clip promises that this season will be bigger and twisted beyond our wildest dreams. Of course, we didn’t get to see much more because, as Wednesday says, it would make our eyes bleed. We get some glimpses of people in school uniforms and explosive moments that make us want to see it right now.

What Is the Release Date for Wednesday Season 2?

Right now, we don’t know when Wednesday season two will hit Netflix. We can only assume it will come our way sometime in 2025. But we cannot wait to see our favorite students once again. And we also want to see Billie Piper. Please, please always give us lots of Billie Piper.

In the meantime, you can always pre-order some Wednesday LEGO sets and work on your latest build or catch the show’s first season (again) on Netflix.

Door-to-door evangelizing seems like a lot of hard work. You have to be out in the elements and spreading the word of your Lord and Savior, often to people who really don’t want to hear it. I’d imagine there are a ton of people who either ignore you, slam the door in your face, or curse you out. And, if you’re a woman, there’s always that extra risk of a guy doing or saying something to make you feel super uncomfortable. But I never thought that a missionary occupational hazard would be running into a lunatic who holds you hostage in their house for weird mental games. That’s what happens in Heretic, an A24 psychological thriller starring Hugh Grant, Yellowjackets’ star Sophie Thatcher, and Chloe East with a trailer that teases a house of horrors.

In the clip, Thatcher and Chloe are two young missionaries trying to spread knowledge about Jesus Christ. Their somewhat meek demeanors mean they are dismissed by most people. Nevertheless, they continue to bike around town and try to save souls. They go to a random, secluded house (red flag #1) where Grant’s far-too-friendly Mr. Reed lives. He invites them inside (red flag #2) and insists that it’s okay because his wife is there (red flag #3).

Things soon go down a dark path when they realize they are locked in. Mr. Reed says they can go but they have to choose between two doorways: one for believers and one for those who do not believe. I’m pretty sure there are terrible things behind both doors. The Heretic trailer is a fun peek that doesn’t give away too much but gives us the gift of a diabolical Hugh Grant. We love when he plays a villain.

Here’s the synopsis for Heretic

Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant), becoming ensnared in his deadly game of cat-and-mouse.

The post All the WANDAVISION Characters Who Appear in AGATHA ALL ALONG appeared first on Nerdist.

Spoiler Alert

Agatha All Along is finally here after a very lengthy wait. For the past three years, Agatha Harkness a.k.a. Agnes has been living in a Westview preoccupied with her various delusions, including masquerading as a homicide detective. In the show’s first episode, we see a very different yet oddly familiar version of Westview that initially starts as a play on True Detective (and true crime shows in general) known as “Agnes of Westview,” and it includes a handful of familiar faces. Episode two continues to unveil more about Westview and even brings one character along for a wild adventure. Here are all the WandaVision characters who lived in Westview that appear in Agatha All Along

Herb (Real Name: John Collins)

All the WANDAVISION Characters Who Appear in AGATHA ALL ALONG_1
Marvel Studios

Wanda and Vision’s neighbor Herb is in Agatha All Along. But this time, he’s not rocking an Afro nor catching anyone on the flipside. Instead, he’s been dealing and going along with Agatha’s constant delusions stemming from her entrapment in Wanda’s distorted spell. She imagines him as a forensics investigator who finds Wanda’s dead body in the woods. In reality, Herb is just a neighbor who 1) doesn’t want to see Agatha naked and 2) is probably over all the weird things happening in his town.

Like everyone else, Herb remembers what happened in WandaVision and knows that Agatha is trapped mentally and cannot really leave. The town seems to go along with her ramblings until Teen and Rio show up to break her from the spell’s slumber.

Dottie (Real Name: Sarah Proctor)

All the WANDAVISION Characters Who Appear in AGATHA ALL ALONG_2

The very bougie Dottie from WandaVision is actually a lot more chill and likeable in real life. In Agatha All Along, Dottie is Sarah Proctor, a Westview librarian who gives Agatha a piece of information about a library book checkout card she found near Wanda’s body. (Of course, Agatha still uses everyone’s sitcom names.) Well, not actually, but in her delusional/transfixed state. We later see Dottie and her family, including a daughter and husband Harold, watching Agatha run in the streets naked after she reclaims herself.

Phil Jones (Real Name: Harold Proctor)

All the WANDAVISION Characters Who Appear in AGATHA ALL ALONG_3

In WandaVision, Phil Jones is the employee who is fired by Mr. Hart after a “terrible” dinner at his house. I guess that’s what happens when you wear a turtleneck. In Agatha All Along, Phil is regular ole Harold, husband to Sarah. We can assume he’s still a piano teacher, even though he was the chief of police for a bit in Agatha’s true crime loving mind.

Norm (Real Name: Abilash Tandon)

All the WANDAVISION Characters Who Appear in AGATHA ALL ALONG_4
Marvel Studios

Vision’s cheerful co-worker Norm is seen in Agatha All Along working at a pawn/repair shop. She stops in and shows him a locket with a piece of auburn hair inside of it. He looks as her oddly as she walks away, probably aware of what’s happening with her grip on reality. We see him later humorously as he runs in the opposite direction of a naked Agatha. Hopefully everything is okay with Norm’s dad and sister, whom he talked about briefly when he wasn’t under Wanda’s spell.

Dennis (Real Name: Unknown)

Dennis was a pizza delivery man turned mail delivery guy in WandaVision. He is in the library and speaks to Agnes in Agatha All Along, telling her that there was a fire and every copy was destroyed. So technically he is still “just the messenger.” She doesn’t know it until a bit later, but he’s talking about the Darkhold. His cameo is perhaps the strangest of them all.

Señor Scratchy (Real Name:…presumably Señor Scratchy, possibly Nicholas Scratch)

All the WANDAVISION Characters Who Appear in AGATHA ALL ALONG_5
Marvel Studios

The infamous bunny rabbit that everyone thought was some mage or evil being in WandaVision seemed to be not real. But now we know that Señor Scratchy is real and appears in Agatha All Along. He lives with Agatha and makes a couple of cute appearances before the coven heads off down Witches’ Road. It’s not lost on any of us that Scratchy is similar to her deceased (??) son’s name Nicholas Scratch. Could her son’s spirit be in her familiar’s bunny body. Maybe we will finally get answers about this bun.

Mrs. Hart (Real Name: Sharon Davis)

All the WANDAVISION Characters Who Appear in AGATHA ALL ALONG_6
Marvel Studios

The most important WandaVision character to appear in Agatha All Along is Mrs. Hart. She was the wife of Vision’s boss Mr. Hart who came over for that humorous and disturbing dinner in episode one of WandaVision. In this series, she accidentally hits Teen with her car while he’s trying to run from Agatha. This allows her to apprehend him and eventually find out that he wants to go to The Road, also known as Witches’ Road. He wants to discover power on its path and says it is what Agatha is missing.

There are entities coming to kill a magicless Agatha and she’s intrigued by Teen, so she really has no choice. But to do it, she needs a coven of people who are at least witchy adjacent to access The Road. She pieces together a few folks but they remind her that she needs a green witch. There wasn’t a name on the conjured list but there was a black heart symbol. So Agatha goes to Mrs. Hart, who is now a widow and deep into maintaining her garden. She invites Mrs. Hart to a “party” and ends up going right along with the adventure.

As far as we know, Mrs. Hart isn’t a witch in the sense that the others are. But this show will likely give us some surprises. Was she perhaps playing along with Wanda at that dinner? We shall see.

We don’t know if we will see more WandaVision characters in Agatha All Along. Of course, there’s always the hope to see Wanda, but who knows what will happen. Agatha and her new coven are on their way down Witches’ Road, so a return to Westview probably won’t happen any time soon, if it happens at all. Either way, it was fun to return to the town and once again see it from a weird perspective.

Castlevania: Nocturne season two will to expand the universe of this popular video game turned TV franchise. It gave us a little something for everyone: a French period drama, a new Belmont, and even a savior who happens to be a vampire. The show was well-received by fans and got a quick renewal just one month after its release in 2023. Now we know that the release month (or should we say window) for the next round of Castlevania: Nocturne is January 2025. A new clip from the series gives us a quick taste of its upcoming drama. Thankfully, the release date for Castlevania: Nocturne season two isn’t too far away!

Here’s a quick synopsis of what to expect in this second round of Castlevania: Nocturne:

Now joined by the legendary Alucard, Richter Belmont and his band of vampire hunters are in a desperate race against time. Erzsebet Báthory, the Vampire Messiah, who already seems invincible, seeks the full power of the goddess Sekhmet so she can plunge the world into endless darkness and terror.

Castlevania: Nocturne season two will have eight episodes that will presumably all drop at one time when it hits Netflix this January. We can’t wait to see how the team-up between Richter Belmont and Alucard will go. We’ll hope, for the world’s sake, well.

THE WALKING DEAD: DARYL DIXON Season Two Clip Shows Carol Fighting to Find Her Friend https://nerdist.com/article/a-guide-to-the-walking-dead-spinoffs/ Fri, 13 Sep 2024 16:15:00 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=893469 The Walking Dead's universe is growing its own hoard of new shows. Here's what you should know about these new adventures.

The post THE WALKING DEAD: DARYL DIXON Season Two Clip Shows Carol Fighting to Find Her Friend appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

The Walking Dead is over but, as we know, the end of the flagship series that’s been in fans’ hearts for over a decade doesn’t mean this world is done. The show already has six spinoff series: Fear the Walking Dead, Tales of the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, The Walking Dead: Dead City, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. Most of them are completed; however, there’s a couple that are continuing this franchise with more seasons.

While The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live gave Rick and Michonne Grimes a happy reunion with their kids, other major characters’ new adventures are just beginning. Daryl Dixon is coming back for a second and third season of his spinoff series. He will reunite with his best friend Carol, who miraculously seems to make it to France to look for her friend. Good luck girl!

The second season of Daryl’s show is nearly here but there’s already news about the next season. We know that production will take place in Madrid, which means our crossbow carrying hero and his brave bestie Carol are heading to Spain. Production is underway and there are several new cast members joining The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon in season three in 2025. Eduardo Noriega, Óscar Jaenada, and Alexandra Masangkay will join the cast as series regulars. Candela Saitta and Hugo Arbués will appear in recurring roles.

Additionally, the synopsis reveals that Carol and Daryl will indeed find each other in season two.

Season three follows Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier as they continue their journey to somehow return home and to the ones they love. As they struggle to find their way back, the path takes them farther astray, leading them through distant lands with ever-changing and unfamiliar conditions as they witness the various effects of the Walker apocalypse.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season Two – “The Book of Carol” Is Coming in September

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is gearing up for season two and confirmed season three. But it seems the series might get a fourth round, according to Norman Reedus during a RadioTimes interview. “We’re about to start seasons 3 and possibly 4 in Spain,” he said. “I think I’m allowed to say that. I don’t know. I just said it. But I think we’re going to Spain, to Madrid, for that.”

Season two will release on September 29 with the first of six episodes. It is time to see what Carol will do and we get a taste of it in the official trailer:

Here are some images to get you ready for Caryl action:

You can check out The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon‘s season two teaser below.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner David Zabel gave fans more insight into season two. He reveals that the Nest is a prominent location in season two and Carol’s previous comment about some mystery person coming back will come into play. “There’s also another clue… this moment in the radio call in episode 5 where she talks about something or someone having come back,” said Zabel. “And the impression we get, and Daryl also gets, is that something’s a little off for her, something’s wrong. And so that’s going to also function into the story for Carol in season 2.”

The Walking Dead: Dead City Season Two Will Arrive in 2025

While this universe is trucking along with Daryl’s adventures, things are slower for Dead City. We’ve known that a second season was coming for a while but didn’t know the release window until now. We will get season two in 2025. Season 1 ended with Maggie trading Negan to get her son Herschel back. Now, Negan is working for The Dama, a dangerous leader in NYC. This next chapter will presumably focus on her organization and Negan’s attempts to escape… if he even wants to do that. Negan no longer has his family and really has no friends either, so he might as well crank up the evil again, right? Well that’s exactly what seems to be the case in the above Dead City season two trailer.

These first-look season two photos bring us right back into the grittiness of this series:

Here’s a synopsis for Dead City‘s second season:

In season two, in the growing war for control of Manhattan, Maggie and Negan find themselves trapped on opposite sides. As their paths intertwine, they come to see that the way out for both is more complicated and harrowing than they ever imagined.

Anywho, season two will bring new faces into the mix. Deadline reports that Sons of Anarchy alum Kim Coates will join Dead City‘s cast as Bruegel, the leader of a fierce NYC gang. There are also a few other new cast members joining The Walking Dead: Dead City in season two. I particularly love Dascha Polanco.

 • Keir Gilchrist (Atypical, It Follows), in the role of “Benjamin Pierce”
 • Dascha Polanco (Orange Is the New Black, Poker Face), in the role of “Major Lucia Narvaez”
 • Jake Weary (Oh, Canada, How to Blow Up a Pipeline), in the role of “Christos”
 • Pooya Mohseni (Law & Order: SVU, See You Then), in the role of “Roksana”

The Walking Dead‘s Potential Spinoff Crossover Event and The Ones Who Live‘s Future

As fans know, Rick Grimes was supposed to get three movies, but now it is the limited series alongside Michonne. The Ones Who Live is meant to wrap up their storylines; however, Gimple says there might be more story to tell. “Anything is possible…,” he said to Deadline. “We’re focused on this one right now. But this one came together in a really amazing way, where there were all sorts of plans. And then the world changed and we altered those plans.”

Rick Grimes sits against a wall with his right hand visible and blood on his face in the ones who live walking dead spinoff
AMC Networks

We obviously know now (and honestly always knew) that Rick did not die in his spinoff. He got to reunite with Judith and meet Rick, Jr., but there are so many reunions that need to happen. Morgan is out there looking for Rick, Daryl will eventually return to the US, and there’s the rest of his found family back home. All signs seem to be pointing to a crossover event, which Gimple wants to happen.

“I do have dreams of merging this all together, and I have laid little breadcrumbs toward that, but you never know exactly when and how [it will come together], because of a variety of reasons,” he told TVLine. As long as The Walking Dead franchise is getting money and attention from fans, it will surely keep making more spinoff content. That’s fine with us but please, please don’t follow the comics and kill Rick Grimes if you bring him back in the future.

With Norman Reedus wanting to play Daryl Dixon for several more years, it wouldn’t be shocking if he crossed into some future spinoff series. I wouldn’t mind a Daryl and Connie miniseries. Perhaps he will somehow come across Maggie and/or Negan in their show. Or, maybe he will be the gateway to introduce us to a new character to follow. A crossover event would likely put him front and center as one of this universe’s leading men.

A lot is happening in The Walking Dead universe and there will surely be more details about other spinoffs if they happen. There’s plenty left to explore in the land of the dead, so let’s keep walking right towards these spinoffs.

In the meantime, there’s plenty of love for the Netflix series in the ether, from Wednesday Addams dolls to a Wednesday Clue board game. But these Wednesday LEGO sets featuring her bubbly bestie Enid are undoubtedly the cutest of them all. All three of them are family-friendly builds that will spark joy as you rewatch the series.

Here’s more details about this one:

This detailed set includes a buildable dorm room with the iconic spiderweb window, a balcony with gargoyles, and a base with buttons to open hidden drawers. It features 4 mini-doll figures (two versions each of Wednesday and Enid), Thing, a cello, typewriter, mystery board, and more. The next Wednesday LEGO set focuses on Jenna Ortega’s beloved character. The way this 702 piece captures her hair and those dark Nevermore Academy vibes is perfection. This one is currently available for pre-order and will being shipping on October 1.

Check out this description for it:

It features two faces and outfits, allowing fans to recreate Wednesday with her deadpan gaze in her Nevermore Academy uniform or her kooky side-eye look and black dress from the Rave’N Dance scene. The set includes hidden compartments, the eerie Nevermore Academy gate, her typewriter, pet scorpion Nero’s grave, black dahlia flowers and crystal ball. Also included in the set is a brand new, adapted LEGO element for a hand, printed with all the iconic scars, to impersonate Thing.

Finally, there’s a chance to create brick versions of Wednesday and Enid, our forever favorite BFFs, with a 239 piece LEGO set. It is not currently available for pre-order but it will release on October 1

Here’s a little more about this one:

This set includes instantly recognizable figures of Wednesday Addams in her iconic black dress and Enid Sinclair with her blonde hair and colourful sweater. The figures come with a baseplate for display, allowing fans to recreate their favourite scenes from the MGM Television produced Netflix series Wednesday and keep the magic alive long after the TV is switched off.

The Black Phone caused some division and stirs among horror fans for quite a few reasons. But one thing that people cannot deny is how darn creepy Ethan Hawke was as The Grabber, a 1970s era child abductor and murder who wears frightening masks. He is a classic boogeyman for sure. Either way, the film did well enough that Universal Pictures and Blumhouse are giving us a sequel to The Black Phone. For now, it is being called The Black Phone 2 and has a growing cast as well as a spooky release date.

The Black Phone‘s original cast will all return for its sequel, which includes Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and Miguel Mora. In addition to them, Deadline reports that Demián Bichir will join The Black Phone 2’s cast as well. His face is pretty familiar to horror fans from films like The Grudge (2020), The Nun (2018), and Alien: Covenant (2017). Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill will also return to write The Black Phone 2

The long journey towards the Salem’s Lot film that’s coming to Max is almost over. The infamous Stephen King story will take us to Jerusalem’s Lot for a terrifying tale involving vampires. After a long wait, we finally have a trailer and release date for Salem’s Lot and we cannot wait to see Lewis Pullman’s take on Ben Mears.

The clip gives us everything we’d expect: attempts to control demons with crosses, bloody shirts, writing bodies, and all-around terror. I’ve long maintained that small towns are the scariest places on Earth and that’s true here. Just imagine going home to spark your creativity only to find yourself in the middle of a real life horror situation. Sucks to be Ben.

Here’s a quick summary of Salem’s Lot to go with that trailer:

Ben Mears is a writer who returns to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot in search of inspiration, only to discover his hometown is being preyed upon by a vampire, leading him to band together with a ragtag group to fight it.

The Dexterenaissance continues. The return of the infamous serial killer continues with Dexter: Original Sin, a Paramount+ with SHOWTIME series which will take us back to the ‘90s to uncover more of his origin story. The series stars Patrick Gibson as Dexter and Christian Slater (one of my personal faves) as Harry Morgan, Dexter’s adoptive father and, interestingly, a homicide detective. Molly Brown is also a part of the Morgan family as his younger sister Debra Morgan. We got some first-look photos a while back and now we finally have our first look teaser trailer for Dexter: Original Sin

In it, Dexter says that he’s not a natural born killer but instead it took a village to lead him down his dark path. I must say, Gibson does capture the spirit of Dexter really well with his actions as we hear Michael C. Hall’s voice as his inner thoughts. Here’s a synopsis for Dexter: Original Sin to accompany this first teaser trailer:

Set in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original Sin follows Dexter (Patrick Gibson) as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer. When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry (Golden Globe® winner Christian Slater), he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcement’s radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department. Patrick Dempsey, Molly Brown, James Martinez, Christina Milian, Alex Shimizu, Reno Wilson and special guest star, Sarah Michelle Gellar also star in this new series, with Michael C. Hall returning to voice the iconic inner monologue in Dexter Morgan’s head.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is gearing up for its fifth and final season. While many fans are sad to say goodbye to the beloved Paramount+ animated series and its wacky band of characters aboard the U.S.S. Cerritos. In honor of Star Trek Day, the series gave fans a quick clip to see what will go down on those lower decks soon.

Here’s a quick synopsis of season five:

In season five of Star Trek: Lower Decks, the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos is tasked with closing “space potholes”—subspace rifts that are causing chaos in the Alpha Quadrant. Pothole duty would be easy for Junior Officers Mariner, Boimler, Tendi and Rutherford…if they didn’t also have to deal with an Orion war, furious Klingons, diplomatic catastrophes, murder mysteries and scariest of all: their own career aspirations. This upcoming season on Paramount+ is a celebration of this underdog crew who are dangerously close to being promoted out of the lower decks and into strange new Starfleet roles.

Star Trek: Lower Decks’ new clip makes us ready for the upcoming season. Thankfully, we don’t have to wait too long. The series will return on October 24 with two episodes. SATURDAY NIGHT Trailer Recreates the Tense Hours Before SNL’s First Episode in 1975 https://nerdist.com/article/saturday-night-movie-trailer-saturday-night-live-first-episode/ Mon, 09 Sep 2024 13:20:00 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=989495 The trailer for Saturday Night recreates the chaos of Saturday Night Live's debut nearly 50 years ago that paved the way for success.

Saturday Night Live is an enduring staple in not only late-night television but pop culture as a whole. The sketch comedy variety series has dominated weekend entertainment for nearly 50 years, launching some of the greatest comic careers for all-time as well as some incredibly iconic moments. If you are an actor, singer, or a celebrity of any variety, it is an honor and dream to be a guest on SNL. Now, a new film, aptly titled Saturday Night, will take viewers into the intense 90 minutes before the first Saturday Night Live episode aired in 1975. The trailer for the Saturday Night movie captures the humor, drama, and chaos of making Saturday Night Live, a TV show that no one knew would become a resounding success.

We get to see quite a few funny moments, including someone mispronouncing Dan Ackroyd’s name in total frustration and a flurry of behind-the-scenes shifts. Here’s a synopsis for Saturday Night to accompany its trailers:

At 11:30pm on October 11, 1975, a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television – and culture – forever. Directed by Jason Reitman and written by Gil Kenan & Reitman, Saturday Night is based on the true story of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live. Full of humor, chaos, and the magic of a revolution that almost wasn’t, we count down the minutes in real time until we hear those famous words…

The Saturday Night cast is predictably huge and stacked with the following people: Gabriel LaBelle, Rachel Sennott, Cory Michael Smith, Ella Hunt, Dylan O’Brien, Emily Fairn, Matt Wood, Lamorne Morris, Kim Matula, Finn Wolfhard, Nicholas Braun, Cooper Hoffman, Andrew Barth Feldman, Kaia Gerber, Tommy Dewey, Willem Dafoe, Matthew Rhys, J.K. Simmons, Jon Batiste, and Naomi McPherson.

What Is the Release Date for Saturday Night Movie?

The film hits theaters on, you guessed it, October 11. (No, that date is not on a Saturday night.) While it seems surprising to release it this year instead of next year on the 50th anniversary, we can think of it as a year-long kickoff of good things to come. In addition to this movie, Saturday Night Live is doing a 3-hour comedy special in February 2025. And surely there will be something happening in October 2025 to mark the big day. Until then, we are ready for Saturday Night.

Werewolves are some of the best creatures in horror. A person who can turn into a hairy and howling creature ready to rip apart anything in its path is indeed a vibe. The werewolf is just as much of a scary story and Halloween staple as vampires, witches, and goblins. So there’s no surprise that there are still movies telling the story of a person (usually a man) who transforms into something deadly and dangerous. That’s what we get in the first teaser trailer for Universal Pictures’ Wolf Man. I really wish it was coming out in October instead of January because it gives Halloween energy.

Prior to this clip’s release, Universal revealed a first look at Wolf Man’s werewolf design at Halloween Horror Nights in Orlando. And, well, people were not super jazzed about how it looked. Fans were hoping that this design wouldn’t reflect what we’d see in the actual movie. Sadly, the Wolf Man teaser trailer doesn’t give us a clear look at the creature. Perhaps we will get more of a look when the full trailer drops.

Here’s the synopsis for Wolf Man

Golden Globe nominee Christopher Abbott (Poor Things, It Comes at Night) stars as Blake, a San Francisco husband and father, who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes and is presumed dead. With his marriage to his high-powered wife, Charlotte (Emmy winner Julia Garner; Ozark, Inventing Anna), fraying, Blake persuades Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger (Matlida Firth; Hullraisers, Coma).

But as the family approaches the farmhouse in the dead of night, they’re attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, barricade themselves inside the home as the creature prowls the perimeter. As the night stretches on, however, Blake begins to behave strangely, transforming into something unrecognizable, and Charlotte will be forced to decide whether the terror within their house is more lethal than the danger without.

Football season is back and, as usual, the NFL is trying to find ways to get more people to tune in. Sure, there are folks who have been football fans their whole lives, like me. But there is even more money for the NFL and big brands to make by capturing the attention of younger fans of all genders. And when it comes to Gen Z and younger Millennials, there’s no one who is hotter among the crowd than Megan Thee Stallion. (She is at the tail end of the Millennial spectrum.) So it totally makes sense to me that this Pepsi commercial for the NFL honors the classic Gladiator commercial from years ago, boasts some Gladiator II vibes, and features Megan Thee Stallion, a tiger, and a few familiar football faces.

Pepsi’s “Make Your Gameday Epic” commercial is a whopping three minutes long and boy does it take you on a journey. We meet two football fans who order a couple of Pepsis at the bar and end up in a situation against a few gladiators. (They are actually football players Josh Allen, Derrick Henry, Justin Jefferson, and Travis Kelce. Yes, the latter is Taylor Swift’s bae.) They watch as the gladiators fight against the tiger using their multimillion dollar skills while Megan Thee Stallion raps and creates her own rendition of Queen’s “We Will Rock You.”

She declares that gameday will now begin and the pair find themselves back in the bar. Then, there’s a small flash of an ad for Paramount’s Gladiator II movie. What a trip, indeed. All I know is Megan Thee Stallion deserves all the good things, including a lucrative Pepsi deal.

The live-action Masters of the Universe finally has a release date and a new home with Amazon MGM Studios. After the long-gestating Mattel film bounced from Sony to Netflix to the dark universe of cancellation, fans were not sure if they’d ever see He-Man’s sword and iconic bob come to the big screen. The last live-action film was way back in 1987, so we are certainly due for another round. Now we know that it is happening. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the live-action Masters of the Universe movie will release worldwide on June 5, 2026. That is still a long wait, so hopefully, this movie delivers the goods for fans.

Amazon Studios/Filmation

Alison Brie, whom fans will know from a wide array of film and television projects including Community, GLOW, and Horse Girl, has joined the cast of Masters of the Universe. She’ll play Evil-Lyn, one of the (shocker here) villains of the story. In the original animated series, Evil-Lyn is a witch and Skeletor’s second in command. In the 1987 Cannon film of the property, Meg Foster and her terrifying eyes played Evil-Lyn.

Camila Mendes, whom many of us know as Veronica from Riverdale, will portray Teela in this film. She’s the Captain of the Royal Guard at Eternos’ palace and trains Prince Adam of Eternia.

The movie already revealed that Nicholas Galitzine will play He-Man in the long-awaited movie. We previously learned that Kyle Allen would star as He-Man, but that, it seems, is no longer the case. Nicholas Galitzine, who recently acted in Red, White, and Royal Blue and The Idea of You, will now play He-Man in the live-action Masters of the Universe film.

Other casting details for the movie are unknown at this time; however, Travis Knight will direct this Masters of the Universe live-action film with Chris Butler penning the script. Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner and Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch are producing. Masters of the Universe has been around over forty years, first making its action figure debut in 1982 with a popular animated TV series to follow, so we’ll be excited to see where this live-action movie goes.

Here’s a synopsis of what fans can expect in the film:

10-year-old Prince Adam crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword—the only link to his home on Eternia. After tracking it down almost two decades later, Prince Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam will first need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man: the most powerful man in the Universe!

When Will the Live-Action Masters of the Universe Movie Release?

As mentioned, this film is slated to release on June 5, 2026. Hopefully, it will not have to move around again.

For now, we will just have to wait and see if this return to Eternia packs a powerful nostalgia punch.

An Animated TWILIGHT TV Series Is Coming to Netflix https://nerdist.com/article/twilight-animated-tv-series-netflix-lionsgate-television/ Wed, 04 Sep 2024 16:55:00 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=947203 In a bit of shocking news, the Twilight universe is coming back soon in the form a TV series at Netflix, and it will be animated.

It seems old franchises are continuing to get new life. The Scream universe is back and thriving, a Gremlins animated series is coming soon, and now it seems we are getting more Twilight. Yes, you read that right. A Twilight TV series is in the works via Lionsgate Television. But, in a surprise turn of events, the new Twilight series actually won’t be live-action, instead we will soon see an animated Twilight series at Netflix. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the streamer is developing the show, which is based no Stephanie Meyer’s Midnight Sun novel that tells the story from Edward’s POV. We’re very curious about how this will play out.

We may soon get a Twilight TV series. A promo image from Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2 shows Edward, Bella, and Jacob running towards the camera followed by other vampires
Summit Pictures

Deadline reveals that Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns shared the news of an animated Twilight show at the Morgan Stanley media conference. He noted, “We’re going to go out with the Twilight series, an animated series, I think there’ll be a lot of interest in that.” We’re sure there will be. When news of the project first arrived, reports did not note its animated nature.

But the publication shares that the Twilight show “had been envisioned as animated from the get-go.” We suppose it would be hard to compete with the live-action version already in the world, so an animated Twilight series is a good way to go. Animation could allow Twilight to bring some of its magical components to life more intricately.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart lie in grass in Twilight.

Initially, The Hollywood Reporter, reported that writer Sinead Daly would pen the script, but the latest update on the new Twilight series did not offer confirmation.

Sources also say that Twilight author Stephanie Meyer could be working behind the scenes for this show. And honestly, it is not a bad idea to have a Twilight TV series at all, especially an animated one. There are certainly a plethora of stories that could be told in that universe outside of the dramz we got with Bella, Edward, and Jacob over the course of the Twilight film franchise. Of course, we may just see a retelling of the main trio’s story. What will Renesmee look like this go-around? Only time will tell. But whatever the animated Twilight TV series has in store for us, we are certainly keeping our eyes open for more information. Hold on tight, Spider Monkey. We’re in for another wild ride.

Another streaming service show bites the dust. It seems like there’s a new show cancellation every day and it’s rather upsetting for fans. We’ve all gotten invested into some new journey only to be left without a tidy conclusion or hanging on a narrative cliff forever. The latest show to be cancelled is Dead Boy Detectives, which only ran one season on Netflix. The eight episode series seemed to resonate with fans and even spent a couple of weeks on Netflix’s top ten list for English programming. And, according to Variety, the show was well-received by critics.

When your world feels like it’s upside down, sometimes a simple smile can turn things around. Smiles are a universal language that often evoke a sense of happiness, peace, and camaraderie. So of course horror would take this sweet gesture and make it extremely uncomfortable. That’s what we got with Smile (2022) and Paramount Pictures is upping the ante with its sequel, aptly titled Smile 2, which boasts a trailer full of jump scares and sinister smirks.

As a horror fan, I will go and check this movie out. However, I am also managing my expectations. There was a very unique, specific vibe in the first film that Smile 2 is veering far away from. It feels more like run-of-the-mill horror fare versus something that truly gave us a unique and chilling narrative. But, I ain’t mad at Parker Finn, who is returning to write and direct this sequel, for getting his money. If I had a successful film and a major studio paid me to do another one, I’d jump on it immediately, too. And who knows? Smile 2 might deliver some swings and surprises that we don’t see in the trailer to really set it apart from other jump scare laden films.

Here’s a synopsis for Smile 2 to go along with this creepy trailer:

About to embark on a new world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events. Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and the pressures of fame, Skye is forced to face her dark past to regain control of her life before it spirals out of control.

One thing I can say is the poster for Smile 2 absolutely rules.

What Is the Release Date for Smile 2?

THE FRONT ROOM’s Brandy Norwood and Kathryn Hunter on the Horror Film’s Hellish Themes https://nerdist.com/article/the-front-room-movie-brandy-norwood-kathryn-hunter-interview/ Mon, 02 Sep 2024 14:00:00 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=990840 The Front Room stars Brandy Norwood and Kathryn Hunter talk about the A24 film's themes of motherhood and religious zealotry and more.

A24’s The Front Room is a marriage of fairytale tropes like the evil stepmother with the horror fare of religious zealotry that can turn bloody. The Front Room follows Belinda—played by Brandy Norwood in her first return to horror since I Still Know What You Did Last Summer—who is expecting a baby with her spouse Norman (Andrew Burlap). Things aren’t quite what Belinda wants them to be in terms of work and getting their house ready for their bundle of joy. And it gets much, much worse when Norman’s estranged (and racist) stepmom Solange (Kathryn Hunter) moves in and begins to cause a ton of trouble. We spoke to Brandy Norwood and Kathryn Hunter about The Front Room‘s themes, character building, and more.

A24

Nerdist: This question is for both of you. When you first got the script for The Front Room, what aspects of the film made you want to be a part of it?

Brandy Norwood: I thought the script was amazing and I loved my character. I felt like it was a role that could really push me and expand my acting, and I wanted to see if I could pull something like that off. And I haven’t been into the horror genre in a long time, so I thought that it was a perfect way to get back into it.

Kathryn Hunter: When my agent said “It’s a horror movie,” I went, “Oh, no.” Then I read it and it kind of escaped all the clichés of horror. It’s a story about family, about social, political, and racial issues. The horror is vested in those things rather than slashing off noses and fingers. This is an adaptation of the original Susan Hill story, which is itself wonderful, but what [directors/writers] Max and Sam [Eggers] have achieved in the adaptation is really brilliant… I think their work is absolutely astonishing. The characters are so detailed… I mean, Solange just leapt off the page.

The characters are absolutely engaging. Brandy, you mentioned that The Front Room is your first time returning to horror in a really long time. What was this experience like, especially playing someone who is so starkly different from Karla Wilson in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer

Norwood: I did a lot of work on my role. I worked with [an acting] coach and I was surrounded by an amazing cast. I feel like Kathryn Hunter brought out the best in me! I never knew what she was going to do in any particular part of the scenes, so I had to stay on my toes and react and stay very present. And Sam and Max [Eggers] made the environment and the atmosphere a place where I can feel free to try to do different things.

Absolutely. I find Solange to be so chilling, Kathryn. I know you build a character from what’s on the script page, but where else did you draw from when creating her persona?

Hunter: Max and Sam shared that their grandfather came to stay with them when they were in their teens. And so a lot was based on that relationship with this person who was suffering from getting old, who was magnificent in some ways, and completely terrifying in other ways. So it was listening to those stories. Throughout my life, I’ve had quite close relationships with older people, too. The whole kind of religious and racist thing was something I had to explore and that was very challenging… It seems, unfortunately, extremely relevant now.

That is a sad truth. There are a lot of relevant themes in this movie, like motherhood and wild religious beliefs. But this film also explores the unequal labor that gets forced upon and expected of women in the household. Can you all talk more about how The Front Room tackles this in a compelling way?

The Front Room trailer starring Brandy as she looks terrified
A24

Norwood: Belinda automatically feels as though she has to accommodate Solange and to take care of her, to provide a space for her to feel comfortable. And you find her being manipulated and used, and it is a battle and a fight. In every scene, she’s like “I’m fighting for my life, for my integrity, for my dignity.” She’s trying to not disrespect Solange and make her feel like she is a part of the family.

Hunter: The role of caretaker is taken by Belinda because that’s how she is as a person, but also perhaps because it’s a default position with women. So eventually when Belinda comes to free herself of that and says, “I am a mother, but my vocation is in teaching,” we absolutely salute that and it’s a huge catharsis. Did you feel that liberation?

Yes, absolutely. And that’s not the only catharsis that happens in this film. We get a twist that many won’t necessarily expect. What revelations do you hope fans come away with after seeing that moment and this film?

Norwood: I hope they feel liberated. I hope they enjoy the film and find the horror and comedy in it. I want them to see a strong woman fighting for her life, fighting for her freedom, and fighting for her family and just knowing that she can do anything, but she’s not going to put up with everything.

A24

Indeed. What does The Front Room bring to this very varied and exciting current horror landscape?

Hunter: I think it’s absolutely extraordinary and brilliant the way Max and Sam have calibrated the tone. You get scared and then you’re disarmed because it has resonances with all sorts of family situations that we’ve all been in… I think it is absolutely unique and genius.

When it comes to horror, the Eggers Brothers create those tonal shifts, but it doesn’t feel chaotic or uneven. They just kind of ebb and flow right into each other really well! One more fun question for you, Brandy. Would Karla or Belinda win in a fight?

Norwood: I think Belinda would win! Karla was facing hooks and chains, but Belinda was facing the possession of the Holy Spirit. That’s different.

See if Brandy can proudly proclaim that “The house is mine!” when The Front Room hits theaters on September 6.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is coming our way oh so soon, and we cannot wait. After the very delightful Knuckles series gave us more information about G.U.N., it is time for the crew to come together and fight against Shadow the Hedgehog. Will Wade Whipple play into the events now that he’s a full-fledged warrior? We will just have to wait and see. What we don’t have to wait and see is a trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 because it is here. In the first official trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Keanu Reeves’ Shadow steals the show by being effortlessly cool. We love an antihero. But Doctor Robotnik also returns… as a friend and ally this time? What a twist. Sonic teams up with the Robotnik, who has been on a bit of a supervillain vacation, to try to stop Shadow. But can this relationship last?

You can watch the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer below.

The synopsis for the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie teases more about what we see in the trailer. It notes:

As we all remember from the last film, Knuckles, Sonic, and Tails are the new protectors of the Master Emerald. But, we know that G.U.N. is about to release Project Shadow into the world. That, along with Dr. Robotnik’s return, even as a friend, will lead to more chaos. We know our blue speedster and his friends have it under control.

Who Plays Dr. Robotnik’s Father in Sonic the Hedgehog 3?

This Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer also makes it a family affair, introducing us to Dr. Robotnik’s father, Gerald Robotnik. It seems that Dr. Robotnik’s father, who also sports a striking mustache, will too be played by Jim Carrey, who plays Dr. Ivo Robotnik himself. A fascinating series of choices that will certainly entertain us.

A few years ago, there were many rumblings about a Star Trek movie with Quentin Tarantino as its director. We at Nerdist tried to imagine how this film would play out considering it is rather far from Tarantino’s typical wheelhouse. We came up with a few ideas but now it seems that none of that matters anymore. During a podcast interview with Bill Maher, Quentin Tarantino confirmed that his Star Trek movie will never, ever happen. Oh well. (Thanks to Comicbook.com for bringing this to our attention.)

“It’s never going to happen,” said Tarantino. “There’s been so much misinformation about what it was going to be—nothing but misinformation. I live in a special zone and part of my zone is because I’m not on Instagram and Facebook, I’m not creating this constant dialogue with the world with what’s going on with my life.”

Tarantino continued and basically said that it’s easy for a reporter to take some news/rumor and run with it because he’s minding his own business off the internet. It was something he had an interest in at one point, but that’s simply not the case anymore. Honestly, that’s awesome for him. A Quentin Tarantino Star Trek is not happening but that doesn’t mean we don’t have plenty to look forward to. Star Trek: Section 31 is coming to Paramount+ in 2025 and it looks awesome. And there’s still yet another Star Trek film coming to continue the film series starring Chris Pine as a young Captain Kirk.

Sometimes, an actor’s offscreen life is just as inspiring and compelling as a character they play. That’s certainly the case with Christopher Reeve, who rose to fame when he famously portrayed Superman in several films throughout the 1970s and 1980s. His dashing good looks, bold activism, and cheerful personality made America fall in love with him. (He also has the best Superman suit of all-time, but that’s another story.) This sentiment only grew after Reeve got into an accident in May 1995, falling off his horse and becoming paralyzed from the neck down. His perseverance and openness about finding his new normal was inspiring, indeed. Now, the trailer for Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story reveals a documentary film that will take us through the highs, lows, and relationships in his life.

Here’s a bit more about what you’ll see in Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story to accompany this trailer:

From the directors of McQueen, Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, this film includes never-before-seen intimate home movies and an extraordinary trove of personal archive material, as well as the first extended interviews ever filmed with Reeve’s three children about their father, and interviews with the A-list Hollywood actors who were Reeve’s colleagues and friends. The film is a moving and vivid cinematic telling of Reeve’s remarkable story.

A long, long time ago, Chris Hemsworth was going to play Hulk Hogan in a movie by director Todd Phillips. Many things have changed since then. Hulk Hogan’s recent stint of not-so-awesome behavior sure is something and Chris is off doing fun action things and being a fun guy. Todd Phillips is fully into the world of DC with Joker: Folie a Deux, among other things. So we aren’t very heartbroken about the news that Chris Hemsworth’s Hulk Hogan movie is not moving forward.

Thor smirks at Bruce Banner

Phillips confirmed the news during a Comicbook.com interview, saying it was simply not coming together. That’s a fair answer because plans change and visions don’t often align. It was first announced five years ago and has been in lots of developmental hell since then, so it is not shocking that we won’t see Chris Hemsworth play the infamous wrestler in a movie. We will see if anything changes in the future.

In the pop culture sphere, we continue to get more reboots, revivals, and re-imaginings of older properties. Some of them are great while others are, well, not the best idea. Up next is Anaconda, the 1997 film starring Ice Cube, Jennifer Lopez (a.k.a. J-Lo), and Owen Wilson as a Nat Geo film group who end up a part of a ridiculous hunter’s quest to capture a really big snake. As we all remember, it did not go well for the group as a whole. Now, according to Variety, Anaconda is getting a reboot movie with Jack Black and Paul Rudd in talks to star in it.

Tom Gormican co-wrote and will direct the new Anaconda reboot movie, which will have a comedic spin on it. Allegedly, this film will be about a group of friends who decide to deal with their mid-life crises by going to remake a beloved movie from their childhood. We will see if that’s the case but either way, the idea of Jack Black and Paul Rudd facing an anaconda is enough to make us want to see it.

UPDATE: Please note that Lionsgate has recalled the Megalopolis trailer due to fabricated critic comments. But you can still read about it below. A spokesperson notes, “Lionsgate is immediately recalling our trailer for Megalopolis. We offer our sincere apologies to the critics involved and to Francis Ford Coppola and American Zoetrope for this inexcusable error in our vetting process. We screwed up. We are sorry.”

The original article is below.

One of the most mysterious and intriguing upcoming movies is undoubtedly Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis. The Adam Driver led movie sets up a trip of futuristic trip full of greed, warfare, and other things in a world that’s not like ours. The trailer for Megalopolis shows Coppola (and the film’s marketing team) striking back at past critics who dissed his previous films, instead saying that he is always on the wave of the future. And honestly, he isn’t wrong… and this trailer is absolutely fantastic.

Here’s a synopsis for Megalopolis to accompany its trailer:

Megalopolis is a Roman Epic set in an imagined Modern America. The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), the mayor’s daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties, forcing her to discover what she truly believes humanity deserves.

Ahhh yes. We finally have some more context to what’s going on here and it seems like a total vibe. The film’s poster is rather simple with Cesar standing with a golden hammer-like object and a caption that suggests he will rebuild the world for a better future.

The post TOMB RAIDER: THE LEGEND OF LARA CROFT Showrunner Tasha Huo on Humanizing a Heroine and Hayley Atwell’s Aura appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

The enduring and beloved franchise Tomb Raider and its protagonist Lara Croft is heading in a fresh direction. After several video games and successful film takes, Netflix and Legendary Entertainment are bringing this adventurous world to animated form with Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. Hayley Atwell steps into the role of famed explorer and archaeologist for an adventure that is unlike any other. A big reason for this is Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft’s showrunner Tasha Huo, a major fan of the games who understands the intricacies of this universe. We caught up with Huo to talk about the show’s timeline, navigating other cultures, and humanizing this iconic heroine.

Nerdist: Tell us a little bit more about how this series fits into Tomb Raider‘s overall game universe and why this time period made sense.

Tasha Huo: This series takes place after the Survivor trilogy and really acts as a bridge between the origin story to the Lara that we fell in love with in the ‘90s when we first started picking up the games. That Lara was very quippy, very confident. I wanted to explore how she became that person.

And how do you think that this series will expand her as not only the heroine we know well but also as a human being?

Huo: That’s a great question. That was definitely a goal of mine. You can do that so much more in a TV show than you can necessarily do in a video game. And I think what we got in the Survivor game series was so much humanity from her that was very moving to me as a player, and surprising given the colder Lara that we met in the original series. So for me, it was really cool to be able to explore the more vulnerable aspects of her while still maintaining the strong superhero figure that she is.

Absolutely! After watching this series, I noticed that the storylines touch on grief and some of the tough emotions that a person must unwind in that space. Why did you want grief to play a role in this particular story?

Huo: Lara has been burdened with grief since the ‘90s, but I feel like she’s never fully gotten over it. And I wanted to move past it, to be honest, so that she could start working on other things, but it felt like we still had to address it. So in this first season, she is dealing with grief and we watch her power through to figure out how to become her best self after that so Lara can start working on other sh*t.

Lara Croft falls to her doom (probably not) in the new Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft animated series.
Netflix

I look forward to her future! One of the tenets of Tomb Raider is seeing Lara Croft interacting with people from different cultural backgrounds. How did you strike that balance between maintaining her role as a hero while also exploring other cultures in a respectful way?

Huo: That’s a great question! I think one of the things I loved about the video games is how immersed you get in other cultures. I mean, they always would inspire me, at least in the Survivor series when we had finally had Google [for research]. Not so much in the early days when it was like, “Oh, what is this thing?” I was that player reading every single that you find and figuring out the history of it. Lara does embed herself in these cultures and it is a natural thing she does. While she may be our guide into it, I want people to feel like they’ve experienced another culture and then become curious about it. So please Google the stuff that you see and the same way we did in the Survivor series!

It’s cool to do that! And it is exciting that Hayley Atwell is portraying Lara Croft. What was your experience like working with her?

Huo: What’s great about Hayley is she knew who this character was. We had maybe a 10 or 15 minute conversation and she got it instantly. And a large part of that is because Lara is partly who Hayley is. Hayley has this incredible levity to her. She’s so naturally funny and buoyant, but on the other hand is a really deep thinker and is not only adventurous, but extremely dramatic and has that powerhouse spirit behind her, which is all the things that Lara is. She’s a perfect fit.

Netflix

Well, she was also Agent Carter and those characters have some parallels, right?

Huo: Yes, exactly.

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft hits Netflix on October 10.

The post Get an Exclusive First Look at Six Flags Fright Fest’s New TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE Maze appeared first on Nerdist.

In this forgotten corner of Texas, secrets are buried deep, and the tales they don’t speak of come to life. They dismiss it as the ramblings of an old timer, but some laugh knowing the dark truth that lurks beneath: the face of madness has returned, Leatherface lives.

In 2022, Netflix and Legendary Entertainment’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre added another gory chapter to the enduring story of the iconic, chainsaw-wielding horror villain Leatherface. The quiet town of Harlow, Texas’ hulking and homicidal maniac comes out of retirement for a fresh killing spree after an unsuspecting group of influencers attempt to revitalize and commercialize the area. Now, you can immerse yourself into the horrors of Texas Chainsaw Massacre thanks to Six Flags Fright Fest’s newest Haunted Maze Experience, coming this September to Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson Township, NJ and, of course, Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington. We have your exclusive first look at the Texas Chainsaw Massacre attraction and all the details behind how it went from conception to completion.

As you can see, the Six Flags Texas Chainsaw Massacre experience boasts much blood and gore to frighten and delight diehard horror fanatics. Several scenes from the film come to life in a brilliant way, including the sunflower field where the sheriff’s van crashes and Leatherface begins his latest reign of terror. There’s also the “crawl of death” that depicts the disgusting catacombs under the orphanage, Harlow’s ominous “dead street,” and the infamous party bus slaughter. (Don’t worry, there are more images below!)

Guests will become the unlucky visitors of this town just as the resurgence of Leatherface happens. He’s donning a new face, revving his chainsaw, and ready to slaughter any unfortunate soul who crosses his path. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre maze will be like climbing into your television and straight into the a horror show.

“You will follow the movie in a linear fashion,” says Allison Fox from RWS Global, who partnered with Six Flags and Legendary Entertainment to craft this experience. “So you’ll see some iconic moments. You’re going to see Sally [Hardesty] in her barn getting ready to fight. You’re going to see the orphanage. You will witness a murder from underneath the bed just like Melody did in the orphanage… You’ll see the iconic party bus, and then you get to see Sally and Leatherface’s showdown, which doesn’t really end well for Sally. And then there’s the grand finale, which I’m not even going to talk about, because you have to experience it yourself!”

With chilling and intense scenes like these, it’s clear why this film was chosen for a Six Flags maze experience. “We wanted to do Halloween no other year, and so we started ideating around the concept of bringing IP [intellectual property] to elevate the experience because movies that are about Halloween are the ultimate scare,” said Edithann “EA” Ramey, the Chief Fright Officer at Six Flags. (Yes, EA has the coolest title and job ever: to create haunted houses and immersive experiences during Fright Fest season.)

“I actually went online and googled what the top franchises are when it comes to [horror], because I don’t love to be scared,” Ramey continued. “So I had to educate myself on what was out there. That particular movie’s IP is at the top and we are based in Dallas, Texas… When I had conversations with our operators about my working list of potential IP, they were like, ‘you have to have Texas Chainsaw Massacre.’ [There were] all these people on our team saying it’s kind of part of our DNA.”

Both Six Flags and RWS Global acknowledge the expertise of Legendary Entertainment with not only this film but with the franchise as a whole. Similar to the theme park’s Fright Fest endeavors, Legendary’s aim during Halloween season is to celebrate its horror franchises in innovative ways.

“When it came to Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022), I was tasked with finding a partner who could match our passion and embrace the film’s unique blend of fresh twists and sheer madness,” said Amado Trevino, Director of Interactive Media & Experiences for Legendary Entertainment. “We found that perfect partner in Six Flags, whose commitment to delivering the ultimate Fright Fest experience made them the ideal collaborator. With the expertise of RWS behind us, we knew we had the perfect recipe for a truly unforgettable event.”

Fox and her RWS team had the challenging yet thrilling task of figuring out how to translate Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s most terrifying aspects to reality. According to Fox, it was not only about maintaining the authenticity of this film but also honoring the franchise’s overall legacy as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.

“This is the first time that this film has been turned into a live experience anywhere,” Fox tells us. “It was challenging because we wanted to see all of it. And you can’t build a lot of this particular movie in practical environments. So the first step was saying, ‘Okay, we need these scenes to tell a cohesive story to understand what’s happening.’ And then the second step was, ‘Can we build these things in a practical environment and still execute them?’ And we surprised ourselves, to be honest.”

Out of all the scenes, there’s one that everyone believes will thrill guests the most. “One of, I think, and the brand agrees, the best scenes in this maze is the party bus massacre,” Fox continues. “It’s probably the most intense, fantastic scene in the movie. So to be able to recreate that scene was great. Guests are walking onto the bus and don’t know where Leatherface is coming from. There’s piles of bodies and blood and rain and thunder happening outside, and it’s super disorienting. Bringing that into a practical environment was like, ‘We did it!’ It’s really going to be something spectacular.”

Ramey hopes that Six Flags guests who experience this attraction will leave and tell others about how awesome it is… and perhaps want another round with Leatherface. “I want my guests to walk out of this experience having felt like it was real and a great representation of the film,” affirms Ramey. “I want them to feel like they went through something fantastic, and I want them to say, ‘I want to do it again.’ and get back in line!”

“This experience promises non-stop scares, jaw-dropping moments, and a level of immersion that’ll stick with you,” adds Trevino. “So, gear up to face your fears and find out what all the “buzz” is about.”

Do you have what it takes to survive Leatherface’s wrath? Find the answer to that question when the Texas Chainsaw Massacre experience opens at Six Flags Great Adventure and Six Flags Over Texas in September. It will continue its reign of terror until November 3. For more information, head to Six Flags Fright Fest’s website.

During this year’s Fright Fest, guests will also have the option to be transported into the eerie realms of Netflix’s Stranger Things and Army of the Dead, Legendary Entertainment’s Trick r’ Treat, Lionsgate’s SAW as well as Warner Bros./New Line’s The Conjuring universe. Specific mazes do vary by park…please check local websites for full details.

Y2K Trailer Takes Us From Partying Like It’s 1999 to Global Technological Despair https://nerdist.com/article/y2k-a24-movie-trailer-rachel-zegler-kyle-mooney/ Tue, 20 Aug 2024 14:55:40 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=990435 The trailer for A24's Y2K humorously imagines what would've happened if the Y2K bug was as bad as we thought it would be in 1999.

Anyone who was over the age of ten in 1999 certainly remembers the panic of Y2K. We all knew that the world was going to go through an apocalyptic technological crash because computers wouldn’t register the “00” at the end of 2000. I was 13 that year and my mom made us all stay at home in the living room, surrounded by flashlights and other survival items just in case we were heading for disaster. Thankfully, that did not happen… but sometimes I wonder about what would’ve happened if Y2K actually went down. Well, A24 has a humorous and rather disturbing answer to that question in the trailer for Y2K, a film that takes us from partying like it’s 1999 to destruction.

In the clip, we meet two high school dudes who sneak their way into a popular kids’ party on New Year’s Eve in 1999. The objective is simple: one of them wants to kiss a pretty girl named Laura at midnight. This soon becomes the least of his problems when the room goes dark and Y2K actually happens. The tech goes wild and death begins to ensue, including a Tamagotchi drilling through a girl’s head. Oof. The tech issue brings down society as the kids try to survive. I personally love this. There aren’t enough movies that celebrate early 2000s culture, much less ones that depict a dial-up disaster.

And what better song to have in the Y2K trailer than “Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba? You literally could not escape that tune in the late 1990s, just like they cannot escape murderous tech.

What Is the Release Date for the Y2K Movie?

Y2K is written and directed by Kyle Mooney. The film stars Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler, Julian Dennison, The Kid Laroi, and Fred Durst. It will hit theaters on December 6.

Everything We Know About CRYSTAL LAKE, the FRIDAY THE 13TH Prequel Series https://nerdist.com/article/crystal-lake-friday-the-13th-prequel-series-everything-we-know/ Mon, 19 Aug 2024 20:38:42 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=990351 Peacock and A24 are teaming up for Crystal Lake, a Friday the 13th prequel series that will expand the franchise. Here's everything we know.

The post Everything We Know About CRYSTAL LAKE, the FRIDAY THE 13TH Prequel Series appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

A couple of years ago, we got the big news that the Friday the 13th franchise would continue to expand with Crystal Lake, a prequel series about the infamous campground. What would a prequel series entail? Will we learn new things about Jason Voorhees’ childhood and perhaps his psychotic mother Pamela?

Here’s everything we know about Crystal Lake

Title

a yellow sign that says camp crystal lake in the woods friday the 13th prequel series
Paramount Pictures

The title of this series is Crystal Lake. This could possibly change as the show dives into development and filming.

Crystal Lake’s Plot

There are no plot details about Crystal Lake yet but we can speculate a bit about where this show could go. Considering it is a prequel, it is likely that we will get to explore the life of Pamela Voorhees to a greater extent. The first film came out in 1980, so the series will presumably go back to the 1970s or 1960s.

Before exiting the series as showrunner in May 2024, Hannibal’s Bryan Fuller previously hinted at seeing a few familiar “manifestations” of Jason and exploring his life as well as his mother’s. But he did note that A24 was taking things into a different direction. Perhaps they will reveal some lore that changes what we thought about Camp Crystal Lake and the franchise’s original players.

Behind the Scenes

Brad Caleb Kane, who is also bringing us It: Welcome to Derry, will be the showrunner for Peacock’s Crystal Lake TV series. He is the creator, writer, and executive producer as well.

Crystal Lake’s Cast

As of right now, there are no casting announcements for Crystal Lake. The last Friday the 13th film in 2009 starred Derek Mills as a very nimble Jason, so perhaps he will reprise his role once again.

Crystal Lake’s Release Date

There is no release date for Peacock and A24’s upcoming series.

I don’t know about you, but one of the most exciting aspects of Daredevil: Born Again is more Punisher and Karen Page content. I need moments between them like I need to breathe. The chemistry, the tension, it all works for me and plenty of others who ship them. The return of both characters also means we will get more Jon Bernthal and Deborah Ann Woll interviews that show just how nerdy they are. In fact, we love this episode of “Real Ones with Jon Bernthal” where Deborah Ann Woll teaches him about a world we know well: Dungeons & Dragons

She explains the basics to Jon, who still seems a bit confused, and how the game influences her acting choices. I could see him getting into D&D considering he’s a comics nerd. Now we need to see them get all the way into it and play together in the future.

Netflix’s KAOS seems like a guaranteed winner. There’s Jeff Goldblum playing a tracksuit wearing Zeus, chaotic destruction, and our Doctor Who queen Billie Piper as Cassandra. How can you not be at least curious about what’s going on here? That question packs twice the punch with KAOS’ latest, and what will probably be its final, trailer.

Here is a rather detailed (and kinda chaotic) synopsis for KAOS to go along with that trailer:

Having long enjoyed his status as king of the gods, Zeus’s reign has never been truly threatened. That is until he wakes up one morning and discovers a wrinkle on his forehead. Believing it to be the harbinger of an ancient prophecy which foretells his destruction, neurosis sets in: Zeus becomes convinced his fall is coming. As his paranoia takes hold, the god of gods – seeing signs everywhere – starts to dangerously self-destruct.

And he’s right to be worried. Zeus’s one time friend and now prisoner, Prometheus, is orchestrating a plan to bring him down. The plan involves three disparate humans, all of whom are totally unaware of their cosmic significance or the part they must play in saving the world. No pressure. (Some pressure.)

Brandy Says ‘The Child Is Mine’ to Her Evil Mother-in-Law in THE FRONT ROOM Trailer https://nerdist.com/article/the-front-room-a24-horror-film-trailer-starring-brandy/ Wed, 14 Aug 2024 13:30:00 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=984818 Brandy returns to horror in the first trailer for A24's The Front Room, where she faces her evil mother-in-law to protect her baby.

Back in 1998, R&B singer and actress Brandy famously fought with Monica over a boy in “The Boy Is Mine,” a song that still rules karaoke nights to this day. Now, in 2024, Brandy is telling an evil, racist mother-in-law that the house and the child are mine in The Front Room, an upcoming A24 horror film. That’s right, Brandy, who famously played Karla Wilson in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, is coming back to the genre! The first trailer for The Front Room shows Brandy battling against an old woman with a sinister agenda.

Here’s a synopsis of The Front Room by A24:

Everything goes to hell for newly-pregnant Belinda (Brandy) after her mother-in-law (Kathryn Hunter) moves in. As the diabolical guest tries to get her claws on the child, Belinda must draw the line somewhere…

The trailer for The Front Room certainly shows Belinda’s mother-in-law trying to do some weird ritual and being a real pain in general. She needs to give it up. Brandy has had about enough. It’s not hard to see…

You can check out even more from the movie with its second trailer, below.

We don’t know how things will end but we do know that Max and Sam Eggers are the writers and directors of this vehicle. Let’s see what these brothers will bring to the screen with Brandy leading the way alongside Andrew Burnap.

The world of Terminator continues to expand. Terminator Zero is hitting Netflix later this month with its own animated take. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that we are totally done with those wonderfully bombastic big budget box office hits. In a recent (and very interesting) interview with The Hollywood Reporter, James Cameron revealed that he’s working on a currently “classified” Terminator project. What are the details? He’s certainly not telling anyone.

James Cameron Is Working on a Top Secret TERMINATOR Project_1

James Cameron said he was curious about Terminator Zero’s take on a world that he built decades ago. The famed director let it slip that he was busy with his own project and, after further inquiry, he gave a quick answer about it. “It’s totally classified,” said Cameron. “I don’t want to have to send out a potentially dangerous robotic agent if you were to talk about it, even retroactively.” Yeahhh, we don’t want any information until he’s ready to dish it out.

The last Terminator film was 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate, which brought back Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s T-800. Sarah did survive that film so perhaps she will come back for another round.

Fresh off the recent success of Longlegs, Ozgood “Oz” Perkins is continuing to deliver horror films with The Monkey. It has all the names attached that will perk up fans’ ears, including Stephen King and James Wan. The first teaser trailer for The Monkey is delightfully short and vague with a creepy monkey drumming and Theo James face covered in blood. Who knew that the carnival song “I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside” could be so creepy? Maybe it is a location hint. Either way, we love to see more from Oz.

The Monkey is based on the 1980 short story of the same name by Stephen King. Let’s get into the storyline of The Monkey a bit to make the trailer a little less mysterious. The story follows twin brothers Hal and Bill (Theo James), who find a vintage toy monkey in their attic. Soon, a string of deaths happen around them. The brothers get rid of the monkey, grow up, and go their separate ways. Years later, deaths begin to spring up again and the brothers have to come together to rid the world of this terrible toy.

Snow White is getting the live-action treatment in 2025. The first Disney princess has been a part of many childhoods since her debut in the 1937 film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Now, Disney’s Snow White will bring that energy to life in a musical film starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot as Snow White and the Evil Queen, respectively, and its first trailer is here.

Fans at this year’s D23 were the first ones to witness this clip. We get that classic whistle throughout the trailer as Snow White traverses the woods with her dwarf friends. It is a bit jarring to see Gal Gadot playing an antagonist after being the very heroic Wonder Woman, but she looks fly. Also, I’m not sure what mirror would tell her that she’s not the fairest one of all, so I will have to pretend that she’s not beautiful. Overall, the trailer for Disney’s Snow White is cute.

THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY’s Showrunner Is Already Thinking About Potential Spinoffs https://nerdist.com/article/the-umbrella-academy-showrunner-steve-blackman-potential-spinoffs/ Fri, 09 Aug 2024 15:30:34 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=989592 The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman already has a few spinoff ideas in mind, but will have to get Netflix's stamp of approval.

The Umbrella Academy’s fourth and final season is here. Some of us who’ve watched the series already know how it ends for the Hargreeves siblings. We won’t spoil anything but, as usual, we are always looking ahead to what’s next. This time-traveling world full of interesting characters and collectives seems quite ripe for a spinoff series or film. The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman previously said he was open to spinoffs and now he gives us a little more information about what one could look like.

CHRISTOS KALOHORIDIS/NETFLIX

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Blackman affirms that any spinoff ultimately rests in Netflix’s hands. But he’s certainly thought of some ideas. “I think there’s a great story in young Hazel [Cameron Britton] and Cha-Cha [Mary J. Blige] down the road,” he said. “There’s obviously the Commission. I think there’s wonderful stories also with some other secondary characters. Then what’s wonderful about our world is we could crossover with our main characters anytime we want to because in a wonderful time-traveling world, you can end up with anyone anytime you want. There are ideas, there’s things I’ve talked about, and if Netflix decides down the road, I’d love to do it. But ultimately Netflix will make that decision. I hope this isn’t the end of Umbrella Academy. I hope there’s another iteration somewhere down the road.”

A series about the Commission could be a vibe. But sometimes we have to simply let a story end where it ends and be okay with moving on. Everything doesn’t have to be a universe with spinoffs and such. We will see what happens with The Umbrella Academy and any potential spinoffs in the future.

Deadpool & Wolverine certainly had its fair share of cameos but this one would have taken the cake. Paul Wernick revealed in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the creative team wrote a scene for Robert Downey, Jr. to return as Tony Stark in Deadpool & Wolverine. And we bet you already know exactly where he would fit in! Wade goes to Avengers Tower to meet up with Happy and asks to join the Avengers and asks if Tony Stark will be a part of the interview. Of course, he doesn’t appear and Happy rejects him from the team. But, in an earlier script, Tony was right there with Happy and certainly would have had a snarky comment about the Merc with a Mouth.

“There is a script. We have the Downey draft,” confirmed Wernick. The writers left the scene easy to adjust in case Downey declined the cameo or if Marvel decided against it. We aren’t sure exactly why it didn’t happen but we’d bet it is because of Downey’s big MCU return as Doctor Doom. Either way, the Deadpool & Wolverine scene was great, even without Robert Downey, Jr. dropping in for a Tony Stark cameo.

In an interview with Collider, Ted Lasso co-creator Bill Lawrence said he would be down for a season four but it is up to the show’s star, Jason Sudeikis. “Whatever Jason feels like doing and whatever his decision is, we’re all down with it,” Lawrence said. “Not only is he the star, he’s the head writer, and he’s also the dude whose life just has to be completely overhauled and moved to a foreign country with young children.”

The door has always seemed open for another season of Ted Lasso. Warner Bros. and Apple TV+ powers that be have said they are open to it as long as there’s just cause for more story. The season two finale of House of the Dragon shows the aftermath of Aemond’s wrath over Rhaenyra’s new dragonriders. He not only burns Sharp Point, he also returns to King’s Landing and tries to force his sister, Queen Helaena, to ride Dreamfyre into war. It was quite the baffling ask considering that the current queen is a gentle seer versus a fierce fighter. So why, exactly, did Aemond ask Helaena to go to war? Is he desperate to win the war or is he actually trying to protect his family from certain death? Ewan Mitchell has some thoughts about Aemond’s motivations.

Ollie Upton/HBO

“I think it’s a little bit of both,” Mitchell told us. “It’s a fight for self-preservation. It’s basically, ‘Look, it’s either going to be them, or it’s going to be us, so it might as well be them… we’re out-dragoned seven to three. If we don’t bind together and take Harrenhal, take out Daemon, and destroy all of the influence that he has in the Riverlands, we’re going to be on a serious back foot.’”

He continues, “…he is desperate at that moment. He’s been made a fool in Rhaenyra raising new dragonseeds, and he had to make a U-turn and fly back to King’s Landing, and he definitely has to feel like he has to overcompensate.”

Of course, Helaena was not into doing this and even boldly told her brother that he would die in battle. While most people ignore her forewarnings, Mitchell believes Aemond will take it to heart in season three.

“He always thought that he was the master of his own fate, but this new knowledge very much challenges that,” he affirms. “I think Aemond will believe that information. He just doesn’t want to.”

Well, that’s fair. Let’s see if Aemond can convince Helaena to join him in battle next season… and if her dark forewarning comes to fruition.

Throughout her career spanning over three decades, the beloved actress Christina Ricci has brought some of our favorite unique and oft-macabre characters to life. We all love her as Wednesday Addams and Yellowjackets’ Misty Quigley. Ricci is a hero to many goth folks among us as well as those who eschew the societal boxes that encourage a status quo based on boring normalcy. To put it plainly, she’s one of the coolest people in existence. Now, Christina Ricci is giving fans a new form of cinematic creativity with Cat Full of Spiders: Tarot Deck and Guidebook, a surrealist dive into her mind through the artform of tarot reading, and we are exclusively revealing four of this deck’s gorgeous cards. This special project by Ricci and writer/tarot consultant Minerva Siegel is based on her impressions and muses throughout her life and career.

As you can see, some of these cards will feature Christina Ricci’s likeness in its artwork by Felipe Flores. Other cards will explain the meaning of the card from her unique perspective. First up is The Chariot, a Major Arcana card that can represent (in its straightforward, or upright, meaning) willpower and determination through challenges to secure victory. Of course, there are many ways to interpret a card. Thankfully, this deck will come with a guidebook to help users as they familiarize themselves with its cards.

Then, there’s the Five of Cups, a Minor Arcana card. It features a woman holding an empty cup with four others on the ground. Five black cats sit on a wall near her as a shadowy figure stands in a window. As we see in the photo, this card can represent many things, including regret and despair. But we are sure that there’s a deeper story to explore within this artwork.

The Six of Swords, featuring a smiling pumpkinhead atop a woman’s body and six golden swords, feels both playful and ominous. We cannot wait to read more about Ricci’s interpretation and artwork choices for this Minor Arcana card.

The final reveal is Two of Pentacles, both of which we see on this card. There’s also a girl carrying a lunchbox in front of a very ’80s-inspired background. She seems to be rushing off the school, a fitting choice for a card that often appears when a reader is doing the same in their life. Like the previous two cards, this is a part of the Minor Arcana.

This tarot deck is a passion project for me. It is filled with references to moments in my life and touches on the moments that come our way as we journey through the world. I hope that it introduces people to the wonder of tarot, or for those that are already ingratiated, provides an expanded connection to it. Ewan Mitchell Says Aemond and Vhagar Are HOUSE OF THE DRAGON’s ‘Power Couple’ https://nerdist.com/article/house-of-the-dragon-ewan-mitchell-calls-aemond-and-vhagar-power-couple/ Wed, 07 Aug 2024 17:41:15 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=989388 Ewan Mitchell calls Aemond Targaryen and his fierce dragon Vhagar a "power couple" on House of the Dragon and, honestly, he is right.

House of the Dragon’s second season is full of many storylines, schemes, and themes. When it comes to the latter, this show explores sacrifice in shocking and often heartbreaking detail. From Alicent being willing to hand Aegon’s head to Rhaenyra on a platter to Rhaenys risking and losing her life for Team Black, people are willing to make serious choices to win the war. This season, Prince Regent Aemond makes a litany of sacrifices, nearly killing his brother Aegon to rise to power and burning an entire town out of rage to send Rhaenyra a message. He also speaks of sacrifice often, telling others they must do what makes them uncomfortable or scared in order to survive.

But, is there a sacrifice or something that Aemond could lose that would break down the seemingly unflappable dragonrider? Ewan Mitchell believes there’s one thing that Aemond simply cannot lose, and that’s his loyal dragon Vhagar.

“Vhagar was very much his first friend,” Mitchell tells us in a recent interview. “He was the first friend that he ever made and the first being that recognized Aemond and actually showed him some sort of attention. She saw something in him that maybe he didn’t even see in himself. If he lost Vhagar, he’d be heartbroken. Aemond and Vhagar, they’re a power couple. They’re soul bonded. I think if Aemond has a breaking point, he definitely hasn’t found it yet.”

We’ve watched the bond between this pair grow exponentially throughout the season. And, as the “spare” son who wants attention and love, Vhagar provides that connection and camaraderie. We doubt House of the Dragon will take Vhagar away from Aemond anytime soon. But, for now, his dragon is the only sacrifice that would truly break his heart. And that makes him perhaps the scariest person on the show heading into season three.

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON’s Ewan Mitchell on Aemond’s True Motivations and His Dark Future https://nerdist.com/article/house-of-the-dragon-ewan-mitchell-interview-aemond-targaryen/ Wed, 07 Aug 2024 17:11:36 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=989373 House of the Dragon's Ewan Mitchell chats with us about Aemond's motivations, his relationship with Vhagar, and that season two finale omen.

Aemond Targaryen’s arc in House of the Dragon season two is undoubtedly one of the best. The One-Eyed Prince finally got the respect and power that he craved after years of ridicule at the hands many. And boy, did he go about it in a wild way. Aemond and Vhagar intentionally set Aegon and Sunfyre ablaze, which led to Aemond becoming the Prince Regent. Since then, he’s been on a dangerous warpath, burning a town with impunity and severing his familial bonds. We caught up with actor Ewan Mitchell to talk about Aemond’s possible motivations, the dark omen over his House of the Dragon future, his love for Vhagar, and much more.

Aemond declared prince regent on House of the Dragon season two
HBO

Nerdist: In season two of House of the Dragon, Aemond blazes his path to power, and he’s ready to start a war. What do you believe is his overall motivation for his actions? Is he just seeking bloodshed, or does he want something else?

Ewan Mitchell: That’s a good question. I think it could be a multitude of things. I think that’s the beauty of Aemond’s ambiguity. You don’t necessarily know what he’s thinking or where his true motivations and allegiances lie, but you definitely know that he is thinking. There is this calculative quality behind his eye. What his motivations are, I don’t know if I want to spoil it too much, but it’s a few things. I think he loves his mum [Alicent]. He wants his mum.

I’m going to quote Spider-Man… “with great power comes great responsibility.” He has the largest, baddest, oldest dragon in the known world. He has to be seen as someone who can wield that effectively. And so I think it could be a multitude of things, and I think there’s certainly a fear in the unknown there as well. What do you think are his motivations?

I feel like it’s a split. Some of it may just be, “I want to go into war, and I want bloodshed. I want to be able to prove that I am a man and I fit into this typical bound of masculinity.” But then I also think that some of it is a bit of wanting to be seen and be heard. Aemond is not the firstborn son nor the only daughter on House of the Dragon, and so maybe it’s wanting to prove your worth and show that you actually matter. Maybe he doesn’t even really want to be in power. Aemond just wants someone to see him.

Mitchell: Yeah. One thing that I’ve touched upon before is the idea that kids need that unconditional love to develop a balanced view of themselves. If a child isn’t embraced by the village, they’ll burn it down to feel its warmth. And so Aemond, like you said, he’s going to find that validation through other means, that attention through other ways, and he might just do that through war.

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON's Ewan Mitchell on Aemond's True Motivations and His Dark Future_1

That is the direction he’s heading! One of the most important conversations in the House of the Dragon season two finale is when Aemond is speaking with Helaena and trying to convince her to take Dreamfyre into war. Is he asking her to do this purely out of desperation to best his opponent, or is it more of a strange attempt to protect the family and their lives?

Mitchell: I think it’s a little bit of both. It’s a fight for self-preservation. It’s basically, “Look, it’s either going to be them, or it’s going to be us, so it might as well be them… we’re out-dragoned seven to three. If we don’t bind together and take Harrenhal, take out Daemon, and destroy all of the influence that he has in the Riverlands, we’re going to be on a serious back foot.”

And like you touched upon, the idea of desperation; he is desperate at that moment. He’s been made a fool in Rhaenyra raising new dragonseeds, and he had to make a U-turn and fly back to King’s Landing, and he definitely has to feel like he has to overcompensate.

Right. It’s interesting that Aemond still wants to chart this course on House of the Dragon, especially after Helaena tells him about the vision of him dying in battle. Will he take that omen seriously or does he still think that he’s the master of his own fate?

Mitchell: He always thought that he was the master of his own fate, but this new knowledge very much challenges that. I think Aemond will believe that information. He just doesn’t want to… [the show] planted seeds earlier in season two, episode six, after he’s made Prince Regent. He is looking up at the Iron Throne, and he yearns for it, and Helaena appears behind him and says, “Was it really worth the price?” It gives the impression that she’s always been ahead of the curve and always known the secrets that happened all around in the skies above Rook’s Rest.

He knew that his sister possessed this foresight. And maybe if you were able to, in some way, shape, or form, harness that power, that might be actually incredibly invaluable for the Greens to possess that foresight to know when a blow’s going to come before it lands. It would be invaluable.

It is a powerful asset to have on your side! Do you think that Aemond actually has the capacity to be a good ruler and maybe redeem himself of his transgressions on House of the Dragon?

Mitchell: Do I think he’d be a good ruler? No. No, I don’t think he would.

I’m still rooting for him because I am an Aemond-apologist.

Mitchell: [laughs] …For the majority of season two, he’s so composed. Whilst all the members of the council table are raising their voices and arguing, Aemond’s always been the kid who sits back and waits for his moment. There is a very cold, calculative quality to him. But as soon as he sits in the King’s chair, he starts to chuck people out of the council, and it’s very interesting… You never say never, but at the moment, he seems pretty bad. Atrocious.

house of the dragon aemond on his dragon
HBO

He’s trying his best! On House of the Dragon, Aemond often talks to other characters about sacrificing for the throne in order to best Rhaenyra. Out of all the sacrifices he’s already made, is there a sacrifice yet to come that would actually break his heart? Perhaps losing Vhagar?

Mitchell: Losing Vhagar would be… Oh, my God, I’d be heartbroken! I would be heartbroken as Ewan because I want to see Vhagar on screen as much as possible. Vhagar was very much his first friend. He was the first friend that he ever made and the first being that recognized Aemond and actually showed him some sort of attention. She saw something in him that maybe he didn’t even see in himself. If he lost Vhagar, he’d be heartbroken. Aemond and Vhagar, they’re a power couple. They’re soul-bonded. I think if Aemond has a breaking point, he definitely hasn’t found it yet.

Vhagar is the breaking point for now, I think. You know, you have quite the fan club now. There are a lot of people who dig Aemond! I call him a royal pirate on a dragon because he’s got the eyepatch. How do you feel about this influx of attention around Aemond, and what has your experience been with the House of the Dragon fandom so far?

Mitchell: Well, I’m not on social media, so I receive a lot of beautifully articulated fan letters that are often badass as well, and I never take it for granted. I use it all as motivation. It means the world to me, and it also means that in collaboration with Amanda Knight, the hair and makeup designer, and Caroline McCall, the costume designer, that our work has really paid off. It’s a testament to their hard work and talent. So I love it all. I read every single one of them, I swear to God.

We’ve always known that the Stranger Things universe would expand in some way. In the next couple of years, we will get the show’s fifth and final season. But Netflix will certainly want to continue the universe of its biggest hit. And while we have our own Stranger Things spinoff ideas, including a ‘90s series, this isn’t quite what we had in mind. Stranger Things headed to the stage for Stranger Things: The First Shadow, a live stage play at the Phoenix Theater in London’s West End. And now it’s also heading to Broadway. You can take a look at everything we’ve learned about the Stranger Things play since we first heard about it below.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow Heads to Broadway

That’s right the Stranger Things play is heading to Broadway. It will begin previews at the Marquis Theatre on March 28, 2025, and has an opening night slated for April 22, 2025.

Tickets for Stranger Things: The First Shadow on Broadway will go on sale to the general public at 11 am ET on September 17. However, earlier pre-sale tickets will be released at 11 am on September 13 for anyone who signs up on the show’s official website.

Meet Henry Creel

Here’s a trailer for what fans can expect in this Henry Creel-centric story taking place in Hawkins in 1959:

A Trilogy of Stranger Things Plays Could Be in the Works

Deadline reports that the The First Shadow could begin a trilogy of plays that delve into Stranger Things world. It notes the this play could be “the first installment in a trilogy exploring the dark underbelly of Hawkins, Indiana.” If The First Shadow is successful, parts two and three could follow in the coming years. With Stranger Things coming to a close, it would definitely be an interesting way to keep the world alive. No official confirmation has yet come.

First full look at The Stranger Things Play, The First Shadow
Netflix

We now officially have our first looks at the Stranger Things play in full force. Netflix has released some images that reveal how the play will look when it’s being performed. The staging is pretty cool. And it looks like someone is fully dressing as a Demogorgon, which we have to applaud. Our least favorite creatures, the Demobats, are also flapping around. And at the center of it all is, of course, Henry Creel, a.k.a Vecna.

Check out all the teases of this play in action below, including images of Joyce, Hopper, Dr. Brenner, and ore, in action.

Netflix has also revealed that the first act title of the Stranger Things play will be, “Chapter One: The Girl From Nowhere.” Very mysterious. Start your speculating now.

The Stranger Things Play Synopsis and First-Look Rehearsal Images

The Stranger Things play is based on an original story by the Duffer Brothers, Jack Thorne, and Kate Trefry (who wrote this play) and will hit the stage sometime in late 2023. Of course, Netflix will produce it alongside Sonia Friedman Productions, and fans will certainly show up to see what happens. Here’s the plot synopsis for Stranger Things: The First Shadow stage play:

Hawkins, 1959: a regular town with regular worries. Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister won’t take his radio show seriously and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get the hell out of town. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds that a fresh start isn’t so easy… and the shadows of the past have a very long reach. Brought to life by a multi-award-winning creative team, who take theatrical storytelling and stagecraft to a whole new dimension, this gripping new adventure will take you right back to the beginning of the Stranger Things story – and may hold the key to the end.

We also have our first look at rehearsals for Stranger Things: The First Shadow. In them, we prominently see Henry Creel glaring into space and also get our first tease of a young Joyce Byers (at the time Joyce Maldonado)

Additionally, a teaser for the Stranger Things play hints that it could also be crucial for understanding what’s to come in Stranger Things 5.

We have to admit that it is quite an interesting take on the series. Fans met Henry Creel and his family last season, and there’s certainly a lot to mine from his story. Sure, there were flashes of his childhood and backstory. But now we will get to see more about his life in the Stranger Things play. And, who isn’t curious about what a young Hopper, Joyce, and Bob were like, as well as the town itself? At this time, Jim and Joyce would have been between 17-19 years old, with the former getting ready to be drafted into the Vietnam War. So, they probably would have little to no interaction with Henry, who was middle school-aged in 1959. But hey, they could always play with timelines and bend the rules a bit.

Behind The Scenes of Stranger Things: The First Shadow

In honor of Stranger Things Day 2023, Netflix shared our long look at the play. Among other tidbits, Stranger Things: The First Shadow sounds like it will prominently feature a love story between the soon-to-be Vecna, Henry Creel, and Bob Newby’s sister, Patty Newby. Writer Kate Trefry shares that the main thrust of the story is Patty and her little budding romance with Henry. We admit we did not see that one coming.

Additionally, the featurette notes that the Stranger Things play is the origin story of how Henry Creel became Number 001 and of the Upside Down. Plus, there will be blood, guts, and Easter eggs.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow Original Cast Information

The Stranger Things play original cast is also set! Shane Attwooll and Christopher Buckley will portray Chief Hopper and Bob Newby, respectively. Oscar Lloyd will be James Hopper, Jr. and we can’t wait to learn more about him. Michael Jibson will take on the role of Victor Creel, Louis McCartney plays his son Henry Creel, and Lauren Ward will be Virginia Creel. Isabella Pappas will portray Joyce Maldonaldo, Ella Kaurna Williams is Patty Newby, and Patrick Vaill rounds out the cast as Dr. Brenner.

Tickets for the Stranger Things play went on sale March 30th. And tickets are now available for as low as £45 (USD $57.20). Additionally, fans can lottery to get “Shadow Seats” for the performances via the TodayTix app. These 11 pairs of seats will be available via lottery each week and cost £19.59 per seat, according to Variety.

The play is now running.
