In the ‘90s, Scream led to a swath of teen ensemble horror franchises like Final Destination and I Know What You Did Last Summer. It’s now officially back into the game with last year’s hit movie and another film coming soon. So, it is not surprising that the franchise is inspiring others to dust off their dormant universes and return back for more gore. Deadline reports that an I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel will release on July 18, 2025.

And, we now know that Freddie Prinze, Jr. is officially returning for the I Still Know What You Did Last Summer sequel and reprising his role as Ray Bronson. The jury is still out for Jennifer Love Hewitt but she is expected to return… and Brandy also wants in on this movie.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Brandy basically says “I wanna be down” with the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel (more of a reboot, maybe?) action. We do love us come Karla Wilson, who survived the events of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

“I need them to give me a call because I survived in that movie!” Brandy affirmed. “I came out in the end, bloodied up, ready to go. I did not die in that film… Jennifer, Freddie, hit me up.”

We don’t know if Brandy will be a part of it or not. But we do know that Camila Mendes of Riverdale fame won’t be in the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot. According to Deadline, she’s going to be very busy with her new role as Teela in Masters of the Universe and the production dates between the two projects do not work.

We will have to wait and see what this next terrible summer includes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Hauer-King are all in talks to star in the movie. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is set to direct this sequel.

If the original stars do come back, the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel will likely follow a format similar to what we saw in Scream (2022). Legacy characters like Julie James (I guess) and Ray Bronson will return to help newer people get through a horrific antagonist is a win for longtime fans and new ones, too. It would be interesting, though, considering that the last time we saw these I Know What You Did Last Summer characters, it seemed that the hooked killer was about to murder them. Of course, this could have simply been Julie’s bad dream.

Thankfully, a canceled fourth film with their confirmed deaths didn’t take place. If both Julie James and Ray Bronson come back for an I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel, it will be interesting to see if they are still together and what their lives are like decades later.

Will We See STAR WARS REBELS’ Kanan Jarrus in Live-Action on AHSOKA? https://nerdist.com/article/will-we-see-star-wars-rebels-kanan-jarrus-in-live-action-on-ahsoka-and-who-will-play-him/ Thu, 03 Aug 2023 21:59:48 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=955371 Ahsoka will mark the live-action debuts of major Star Wars Rebels characters, and there's reason to think Kanan Jarrus will be one of them.

Kanan Jarrus gave his life to save his loves ones during Star Wars Rebels fourth season. It was one of the animated show’s seminal moments. The Jedi’s final act of heroism also served as Kanan’s last, and arguably most important, lesson for his Padawan. Ezra Bridger followed his Master’s lead and made a tremendous sacrifice to protect his loved ones in the series’ finale. He willingly vanished into the galaxy’s Unknown Regions to ensure he took Grand Admiral Thrawn with him. Ezra is still missing ahead of Ahsoka on Disney+, which will take place many years after Star Wars Rebels. But that doesn’t mean Kanan Jarrus won’t also get to also make his live-action debut on the show just as other members of the Ghost will. And not just because he might appear in a flashback.

The World Between Worlds means Kanan is always alive somewhere.

Could Kanan Jarrus Appear in a Flashback on Ahsoka?

“No one’s ever really gone” in Star Wars. Force ghosts, mod doctors, and cloned Emperors show characters have all sorts of ways of coming back from certain death. But the franchise could always let Kanan Jarrus make his live-action debut on Ahsoka the old-fashioned way. It’s one that doesn’t involve retcons or resurrections: a flashback.

That’s how two recent live-action Star Wars shows featured famous Jedi. Hayden Christensen didn’t just play Darth Vader on Obi-Wan Kenobi, he also reprised his role as Anakin Skywalker in a flashback. That old training sequence between Padawan and Master was more than just a nod to the prequels or a way to show Christensen’s face, either. It proved important in the show’s present day timeline, when the two former friends fought once more.

The Mandalorian also let another legendary Star Wars alum return to the screen via flashbacks in 2023. During season three Jar Jar Binks actor Ahmed Best played Jedi Master Kelleran Beq, a character he’d only played on a kid’s gameshow. This time we learned he was the Jedi who saved Grogu during Order 66.

So while Kanan Jarrus, whose real name was Caleb Dume, might be long gone by the New Republic era, that doesn’t mean he can’t still appear on Ahsoka. In fact, he doesn’t even need a flashback to do that. A character could see Kanan alive thanks to a realm that exists at the nexus of space and time.

Could Kanan Jarrus Appear in the World Between Worlds on Ahsoka?

Star Wars Rebels‘ final season introduced one of the most unique and important places in the franchise’s history, a dimension unlike any other. The World Between Worlds exists outside the normal universe. It consists of pathways and portals that sit between time and space.

It’s a hard realm to fully understand. Whether you’ve seen the animated show or not you should read our exhaustive primer on that dimension to prepare for Ahsoka. The World Between Worlds played a major role in Ahsoka Tano’s past and seems poised to play a major role in her future.

It’s also where we last saw Kanan Jarrus. When Ezra Bridger journeyed to the World Between Worlds, he saw Ahsoka through a doorway. It was the moment Ezra believed Ahsoka had died years earlier fighting Darth Vader. Only she didn’t actually meet her end that day. Ezra instinctively reached through the portal and pulled her into the World Between Worlds before Vader could kill her. He saved her life thanks to that dimension.

As the two then explored that strange realm they came across another door that showed a painful moment in Ezra’s past. They watched as Kanan sacrificed himself. Ezra wanted to pull Kanan through the door just as he had with Ahsoka, but she pointed out Kanan died saving them. If Ezra changed that moment he might have doomed them all. So as hard as it was, Ezra watched his Master die once more.

But when you’re inside the World Between Worlds no one is ever dead. Kanan is always alive on the other side of a doorway if you look. And whether someone uses the World Between Worlds to enter a point in the past or simply sees him through a portal, the late Jedi can make his live-action debut on the show without a traditional flashback. Unlike a flashback, he’d really be there in that moment.

If he does appear in that manner his scene will likely be important to the show’s story, same as Obi-Wan and Anakin’s old training session proved important on Obi-Wan Kenobi. And it will also be espcially meaningful if Lucasfilm casts the voice of Kanan to reprise the role in person.

Who Would Play a Live-Action Kanan Jarrus?

Lucasfilm

Some Star Wars‘ voice actors have made the transition to live-action with their animated characters. Among those who have stayed in the role across mediums is Katee Sackhoff. She played Bo-Katan Kryze on The Clone Wars and Rebels before joining The Mandalorian. David Tennant will also once again voice the Jedi lightsaber building droid Huyang on Ahsoka. And Lars Mikkelsen will be Grand Admiral Thrawn on the show, same as he was on the animated series.

Not every Rebels star was given that opportunity. Just as Rosario Dawson took over the role of Ahsoka from Ashley Eckstein, fellow Rebels‘ characters Hera Syndulla, Sabine Wren, and Ezra Bridger are all getting new performers for their live-action debuts.

Star Wars: Rebels' Kanan Jarrus after losing his sight.
Lucasfilm

Clearly Lucasfilm does not feel beholden to every voice actor. They do not all get an opportunity to play their character in live-action, no matter how important they were to an animated show. And yet, it feels like only one person could play Kanan Jarrus in live-action, the performer who voiced him on Star Wars Rebels – Freddie Prinze Jr.

Not only does Prinze Jr. look like Kanan, he obviously has plenty of on-screen experience. He also loves the franchise and has been vocal in protecting it from some of its worst elements. He wouldn’t just be the best option to bring Kanan (back) to life, he’s the only one we want to see get the chance.

Star Wars has the perfect opportunity to do just that. The World Between Worlds exists outside of time. Every character from the galaxy far, far away, including one of its bravest Jedi, is always alive when you’re inside it.

Welcome to our The Best Things Streaming column. Each month, we’ll run down the best of what’s hitting your fave streaming channel! As the COVID-19 crisis continues and we all do our best to shelter-in-place, Hulu is delivering a slate of exciting stuff for us all to watch. A highly anticipated biopic of a famed horror author sits alongside a film about a beloved kids’ TV figure. We’re also getting a hard-to-find slasher sequel and a recent horror hit. Basically, there’s plenty of great picks to get you through June!

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (June 1st)

The Best Things Coming to Hulu in June_1

Columbia Pictures

Look. Maybe this is just us, but we need a few corny slashers right now. I Still Know What You Did Last Summer has long been hard to find on streamers, but that is all changing as it’s coming to Hulu this month, and we couldn’t be more excited. After escaping the hook-wielding fisherman in the first movie Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Freddie Prinze Jr. are back, and they’re joined by Brandy (yay) and Jack Black as a white rasta… (at least he dies).

Incident at Loch Ness (June 1st)

The Best Things Coming to Hulu in June_2

Zak Penn

This hilarious mockumentary focuses on the legendary auteur Werner Herzog as he attempts to hunt down the Loch Ness monster. Honestly, if that doesn’t sell you then I’m not sure what will. Herzog does a great job playing himself here in this hyper-low budget comedy, which is nothing short of a delight. Zak Penn directs and writes this meta-romp that pokes fun at Herzog whilst making us wish that the director really did want to make a movie about Nessie.

Shirley (June 5th)

The Best Things Coming to Hulu in June_3

Neon

This flick about the woman behind some of horror’s most haunting stories is at the top of our to watch list. Check out the official description here:

“Renowned horror writer Shirley Jackson is on the precipice of writing her masterpiece when the arrival of newlyweds upends her meticulous routine and heightens tensions in her already tempestuous relationship with her philandering husband. The middle-aged couple, prone to ruthless barbs and copious afternoon cocktails, begins to toy mercilessly with the naïve young couple at their door.”

Into the Dark: Good Boy (June 12th)

The Best Things Coming to Hulu in June_4

Blumhouse

We will watch Judy Greer in anything and everything. Luckily for all people of good taste, she is leading the newest entry in Hulu and Blumhouse’s Into the Dark series. When a woman gets an emotional support dog, her life gets infinitely better and less stressful. What she doesn’t know is that this is due to the fact that her dog is killing anyone who stresses her out!

Charlie’s Angels (June 25th)

The Best Things Coming to Hulu in June_5

Sony Pictures Releasing

We can’t blame you if you didn’t see Charlie’s Angels in the theater, as the marketing was questionable and the reviews weren’t exactly glowing. But I am here to tell you that this movie is actually good; it’s campy, it’s a little gay, it’s got solid action, and K-stew is incredibly funny and hot. Basically, this is the corny quarantine watch that you need this month! Embrace it!

REBELS’ Freddie Prinze Jr. Goes On Epic STAR WARS Rant https://nerdist.com/article/rebels-freddie-prinze-jr-goes-on-epic-star-wars-rant/ Thu, 10 Oct 2019 22:47:35 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=672484 Former Jedi Knight has a few thoughts on the current state of Star Wars discourse.

For folks of a certain age, Freddie Prinze Jr. is that one dude from a lot of ’90s teen movies. But for Star Wars fans, he is one of the greatest Jedi who ever lived. For four seasons, he portrayed Jedi Knight Kanan Jarrus on the animated series Star Wars: Rebels. Prinze was already a life long Star Wars fan before landing the role. But while working under series creator Dave Filoni, he became immersed in the ways of the ins and outs of the Force and the entire Star Wars mythology. Because Filoni learned everything from George Lucas himself. So, we’ll go out on a limb and call Freddie Prinze Jr. a certified Star Wars expert.

Kanan Jarrus and the man who played him, Freddie Prinze Jr.

Disney / YouTube

Now, there’s a new Instagram video of the actor going on a truly epic rant about modern Star Wars fans, their toxicity, and their inability to admit that at it’s core, Star Wars has always been a fable for children. The rant is actually in a preview for Jeff Dye’s Friendship Podcast, which will surely cover many other topics. But this Star Wars rant is just pure gold.

At one point in the video, Prinze says “Luke Skywalker is Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty! He can talk to things that don’t speak English, and he understands what they’re f***ing saying; he gets a fairy godfather instead of a fairy godmother, who teaches him how to be the best Jedi in the world in no time f***ing flat”. So, where’s the lie?

One of the biggest complaints over the past two years from a certain set of Star Wars fans is how powerful Rey is in comparison to Luke at the start of the current trilogy. But Freddie pokes holes in that theory with his precision lightsaber. And he points out the hypocrisy some fans have in relation to how many give Luke a pass on how fast he became a badass Jedi. After all, Obi-Wan never taught him to lift things with his mind. But he did it at the start of Empire anyway! And yet Rey gets eviscerated by some for holding her own against Kylo Ren. Double standard much?

Kanan Jarrus, in Jedi meditation.

Lucasfilm

Prinze’s Rebels character Kanan was a padawan learner who survived the Jedi Purge of Order 66, and went into hiding after his Master was killed. He then grew up to be the leader of the group of rebels who traveled the galaxy on board the ship known as The Ghost. He reluctantly became a Jedi again during the early days of the Galactic Civil War; and sacrificed his life for the good of the galaxy. But not before passing on his Jedi knowledge to his young student, Ezra Bridger. Although his character died a few episodes before the finale, there could be untold stories about Kanan we haven’t seen yet. Now more than ever, we’d love to see Freddie Prinze Jr. get another crack at the character. Clearly, he gets Star Wars better than most.

What Does STAR WARS REBELS’ Big Reveal Mean for EPISODE IX? https://nerdist.com/article/star-wars-rebel-time-travel-episode-ix/ Wed, 28 Feb 2018 16:39:57 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=574700 The post What Does STAR WARS REBELS’ Big Reveal Mean for EPISODE IX? appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

With each new entry this season, Star Wars Rebels has been shaking fans to the core. Between intimate character moments, surprising cameos from some of the galaxy’s most terrifying villains, and the death of a beloved character, the team behind Rebels isn’t holding anything back. But they’ve outdone themselves with the bombshell introduction of canon time travel in the most recent episode, “A World Between Worlds.”

The episode revealed a dimension that added layers to Obi-Wan’s iconic quote about the Force: “It’s an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together.” Presenting a dimension in which all of history, past and present, is accessible via the portals in the Lothal Temple, Rebels exploded the notion of time and space as we knew it in the Star Wars Universe! This obviously has huge ramifications for Rebels and the final three episodes of the show, but it could also mean massive changes in the main Star Wars continuity, especially in the upcoming Episode IX. Why introduce something this groundbreaking and game-changing into a show that’s about to end? Strap into your Corellian YT-1300f light freighter, because we think it’s pretty likely that time travel is coming to J.J. Abrams’ finale of the new Star Wars trilogy!

It might seem a bit outlandish to suggest that Episode IX will introduce Force-enabled time travel, but when you start to think about the way we’ve seen the Force change and grow within the new Star Wars canon, it actually makes sense. The Last Jedi spent lots of time introducing us to new Force abilities, from Rey and Kylo’s telekinetic connection to Luke’s astral projection in the final battle of the film. These radical uses of the Force were controversial, but very much in keeping with the Lothal Temple and its powers.

The Temple contained a secret dimension that held every moment in existence in one place, all accessible via circular doors (and, of course, the Force). And if there’s a centralized source where all of the moments in Force history collide, it would make sense that people strong with the Force could harness that power to connect two minds across the galaxy or project themselves to another place or time.

Since it was announced that J.J. Abrams would take over the final installment of the new trilogy, rumors about just what his plans might be have been plentiful. A fan on Reddit claimed to have met Abrams and asked him about the trilogy, saying that the director told him Episode IX “is also the film which unites all three trilogies and brings everything together.” Vague, yes, but an incredibly interesting statement after Rebels’ big reveal.

How easy would it be to introduce the portals seen in the Lothal Temple as a way of connecting the three eras of Star Wars? There’s been a lot of speculation about the potential for the film to be set a long time after The Last Jedi, in which case once again time travel makes a lot of sense, either to explain a time jump or connect the newer story to the stories of the past.

Star Wars Rebels and other contemporary non-film canon have already been used to introduce things that would later appear in films. Greg Rucka’s Shattered Empire comics introduced the parents of Poe Dameron and their Force trees, which would end up playing a role in The Last Jedi. Claudia Gray’s fantastic Leia, Princess of Alderaan novel introduced fans to a hero of the resistance, Amilyn Holdo, months before we met her in The Last Jedi.

Rebels also teased the controversial Force flight before her royal highness Princess Leia made us all cry and saved herself during that same film. So why wouldn’t the team use the final episodes of a beloved and critically acclaimed animated show to sow the seeds of a concept that will change the shape of the filmic galaxy forever?

This would also be a great chance to see the world of Rebels fully integrated into the main Star Wars film canon. Though there’ve been nods to Rebels in the live action films—in Rogue One, the Ghost ship can be seen over the battle of Scarif, and Hera’s droid chopper is seen on Yavin 4—this could be a chance to bring in major lore and locations.

What if Episode IX saw Rey, desperate for answers, heading to find the Lothal Temple after the destruction of the Temple on Ahch-To? Or perhaps Kylo discovers an old hologram that mentions the Temple and its powers, and heads there to try and connect with his grandfather? The possibilities are honestly endless.

Do you think Abrams is brave enough to bring time travel into the Star Wars films? Can’t wait to see the Rebels finale next week? Just wanna see Qui-Gon, Han, and Ahsoka go get a sandwich together? Let us know below!

STAR WARS REBELS Takes a Heartbreaking Turn https://nerdist.com/article/star-wars-rebels-kanan-death/ Tue, 20 Feb 2018 03:00:00 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=573060 The post STAR WARS REBELS Takes a Heartbreaking Turn appeared first on Nerdist.

Warning: Serious spoilers are ahead for the Star Wars Rebels season four episodes, “Jedi Night” and “DUME.” Jump into hyperspace and away from this page if you haven’t watched the episodes yet.

Star Wars Rebels is unique in the greater Star Wars universe for myriad reasons. It’s enriched mythology and exploration of the Force in ways we haven’t quite seen before. The animated series focuses on a family, and not family related by blood, but family that’s chosen each other. The show’s shown one of the few mother-daughter relationships in the galaxy with Sabine Wren and her mother Ursa. And now, it adds another first: Star Wars Rebels lost a key character in Monday’s episode and took the time to face grief and the different ways it can manifest.

Leia Organa watched the Empire destroy Alderaan. She had no time to dwell on emotion because of the looming attack on the Death Star. Han perished in The Force Awakens, but characters had to worry about getting away from Starkiller Base and then evacuating the rebel base on D’Qar. I could give more examples, but other than brief or symbolic scenes of grief, we haven’t had the opportunity to get up close and personal with loss in Star Wars.

Kanan Jarrus, voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr. (I cannot give enough praise for his performance in “Jedi Night”), sacrificed himself to save his family. After rescuing Hera from the Imperials, he used the Force to hold back a massive explosion that would have engulfed him, Hera, Ezra, and Sabine. It’s the ultimate Jedi act to be so selfless. In Kanan’s final look at Hera, he regained his sight. He viewed things clearly. I couldn’t see any fear, only determination. It was a heartbreaking but beautiful end for the character who’s gone from a reluctant teacher to a wise warrior and mentor.

To kill a central character is no trivial matter. Not in Star Wars. We’ve watched some major characters we’ve known and loved for decades pass in recent films, sure, but this isn’t Game of Thrones—you don’t expect a key death every other episode. And, though it’s easy for me to forget, Rebels is a children’s TV show. That’s why it’s especially important to see the rest of the Ghost crew react.

Kanan’s death had a huge impact on his family. That’s obvious. I could say so without on-screen evidence because we know they all cared for one another. But we saw every member of the crew process the news. Zeb and Sabine grieved through anger; they wanted to exact revenge upon the Empire, a life for a life. Ezra responded with fear. He lost his teacher and a father figure; he admitted to the loth-wolves he was afraid. Hera was despondent. She’d just told Kanan she loved him; she reacted with sadness and regret and guilt.

As the second episode, “DUME,” progressed, each character took small steps forward. They honored Kanan’s memory by remembering his optimism and his teachings. They were assisted by Chopper (by the way, Chopper taking Hera’s hand nearly broke me) and by the mysterious loth-wolves, including one giant one called Dume, which is Kanan’s true last name. Kanan’s loss is going to be painful for a long time. This is the first personal loss for the group, and given how long they’ve been fighting the Empire, that’s kind of remarkable. This will leave scars on all of them.

Nothing about grief is straightforward. It’s complex with flowing threads primed for tangles and knots. The feelings can come and go in waves. While we only saw the beginning of how the rebels grapple with their new reality without Kanan, it was impactful, well-crafted, and performed with precision and grace.

What do you think of what happened to Kanan? How about the reaction of the Ghost crew? Tell me in the comments.
